I know this has been asked a million times. What are people getting for MPGs in your 2500s with the 6.4? Not interested in towing numbers, just normal highway and city numbers. I'm really on the fence between a 2500 and 1500 and it really comes down to weekly cost of driving for me. We drive a lot out of state on highways and rural roads. Right now I have a 2015 1500 with 154k miles and I've been consistently getting 17-20 mpg on our trips. I'm curious how much of a hit I would take at the pump if I go to a 2500.

Thank you in advance, sorry for the redundant topic...lol

I had a '17 Power Wagon with 4.10's. Driving back and forth to work (about 50 miles round trip) on 55 mph rural highways, I'd average close to 16 mpg. Expressway was about 13.5 doing 75, maybe 14 doing 70. In town...I won't go there, suffice to say it was terrible.

If weekly cost is a consideration between the two, you will eventually hate the 2500. Fuel economy is not a strong feature of the 6.4L engine. I have one because I like the way it tows my camper. It's bigger, stronger, more durable. And more costly to run. Enjoy the 1500, you'll be happier.

I upgraded to heavy 35" tires and I'm averaging 15-16 MPG in my PW...
FWIW- the 2019 1500 Laramie I traded in with the 5.7 and upgraded 33s only averaged 17-18...

I'm averaging 16mpg driving to and from my new home construction site. I travel mostly rural roads doing 55mph on average. I'm ok with that. I also have the 50 gallon tank which is a great feature to have.

2015 with 4:10 rear. 12 to 13 in town, 15 to 16 on HWY at 75MPH. Best I ever got was 17.2 with a strong tailwind heading north on 75.

75% highway. My current 3.6 Warlock vs. my previous 6.4 Tradesman. Not towing it’s about 20 mpg vs. 15mpg, but the 6.4 could get 12 if the headwind was strong or it was -30 out. Also, the 6.4 used Costco 91 which was the same price as 89 everywhere else.

Another thing. With 87 gas around 1.40/L and 91 around 1.55/L driving as much as I do, I’m saving around $350-$390 per month in fuel alone.

When gas was cheaper and the difference in fuel octane price not nearly as bad, it wasn’t an issue to spend a little more for the big truck. Not anymore. That’s a B/W payment I save every month.

Your mileage may vary. Do all the math and look at the bigger picture.

Holy smokes...you must have a heck of a commute. I picked up my truck on March 24th, and I just filled it up for the 4th time last week. I think I've probably spent a total of <$300 on gas. And I live rural and it's my only vehicle.

This is hand calculated results over 2 years. City, Highway and off road, very little towing. This is not a daily driver, used mostly for hunting, fishing and the odd long highway trip.

If you are are concerned about money you are doing the wrong math by just looking at MPG. You need to take into account other factors:

1500 Vs 2500 differences
Insurance cost
Purchase Price
MTC

You will find that MPG variance is not the deciding factor.

Zoe. Have to agree. My fuel cost on any vehicle are the cheapest part of owning it. Order would be
Depreciation
Insurance, tires and maintenence
Fuel

People just think most about fuel because they see that every few days when they fill up.

my insurance is less then 1/2 a tank of fuel per month. Gas is by far the most expensive part of owning a truck here anyways. Over $200 to fill truck. Shakes fist at gas prices! Lol

In two years i have spent 5400 on gas. Meantime the truck has depreciated at least 30,000. Insurance, tires and maintenance over two years equals the gas cost. The more miles you drive the more fuel becomes a factor but I would have to drive at least 40,000 miles a year for fuel to equal current depreciation. There is also the consideration that depreciation normally slows down after the first two years, but would accelerate a lot at that kind of annual mileage because you mile out the truck in 5 years. 80,000 purchase price depreciated in 5 years is 16,000 a year.

How much is the insurance difference between a 1500 and 2500?
