So my 2015 6.4 with 22,000 easy we’ll cared for miles has started puffing out some blue smoke on startup. Not every time, but I’ve noticed it several times now after it sits for a while. I’m assuming this is an indication of valve seal leaking by. Is this a common issue for the 6.4? If it’s burning oil at 22,000 what’s it going to be like at 100,000 miles? Good thing it’s still under drive train warranty!

Your not alone. Though I haven't seen it since mid-November and my truck has sat for 2 weeks at a time. Here's a link..

The RAM dealer could never give me an explanation of why. The best explanation I've been given was on another forum. Here is what this poster had to say about it....

Is the blue smoke on a cold motor after sitting a day or so that goes away almost immediately?

If so it’s common with the dodge gassers of this generation. The CCV system makes a tiny bit of oil pool in the intake that is subsequently burned on first start.

My last 5.7 and my Challenger with the 6.4 both would do it. My catch can setup significantly helped. I get a little more than a tablespoon of oil out of it every 6mo/~2-3k

I’m willing to bet that this is what you’re seeing"

I’ve always figured something is “normal” if it does it form day one, but if it changes from new, then it’s a degradation of some part of the system and/or parts that my be typical, but not “normal”, or acceptable on a well maintained engine with just over 20,000 miles on it.

The HEMI engine is notorious for blowby and some oil pools in the intake to be combusted at start up after it condenses. The stock intake system has no way to capture the oily gas that gets reintroduced into the intake upstream of the air filter.

My 6.4L 2500 did it. My 6.1L SRT8 did it. I installed a catch can on the SRT8 to keep that blowby out of the intake and it worked. My throttle body plate is also nice and clean.

Mine does it if I crank the truck for less than a minute or two, (such as moving it to cut the grass) and then crank it back later. Does one puff and then is fine.

I burned about half a quart between my last oil change. I think it was 7000 miles

Mine too only once every month or two.

Hi Blazin383,
We understand why this may be concerning. We suggest having your dealer inspect this concern if you have not done so already. We are also available via private message if you would like any additional assistance during that process.

you should have seen the blue smoke from my 16 hellcat. it really looks like i was running oil instead of gas every so often
but ran 20k HARD miles no problem.

my 20k mile powerwagon doesnt have much blue smoke, but will puff a few every cold startup
