I have a 2016 6.4L with 138,000 miles and just out of nowhere developed a nasty tick accompanied by a rough idle and P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire. I'm assuming it's a lifter eating the cam. I look at this as an opportunity to do some upgrades and am aiming to keep it all under $10k. I am looking to have a performance cam installed and any associated parts along with it.
I use this truck mostly as a daily driver on 35s but it also sees seasonal camper (8,000LB) and boat (5,000LB) towing through Appalachia.
I've done a lot of research and think I've settled on a FRP Hellfire 2.0 cam kit. The description for this cam is "216/226 111+4" and is recommended for 6.4L trucks with stock converter that see towing use. I've also found videos online of trucks that have this cam and everything seems to work well.
The kit comes with MDS delete "Hellcat" lifters, MDS plugs, new valve springs, pushrods, phaser limiter, head gaskets, head bolts, cam bolt, crank bolt, timing cover gasket, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, water pump gasket, valve stem seals. I'm also going to have the engine builder replace the water pump, all new timing set, and high volume oil pump.
The tuner uses HP Tuners and will use that to dyno tune the truck. I already have an unlocked PCM running a Diablosport tune so I'm good there.
My question is: Do I need anything else or am I missing anything? Will the stock spec torque converter work well with this cam or should I look at doing a higher stall speed converter or different cam? I understand that long tube headers will give the most gains, but I'm not sure that will be in the budget. Maybe down the road I can do that along with a retune?
For conversation sake, I looked at other cams and had the following thoughts:
MMX: It seems like this one is pretty mild or almost a direct OEM replacement. They push it as a "NSR" (no springs required), No tune required type cam.
BTR: It seems like this one might be a little too hot for my needs.
TSP: Again, the specs I could find on their website seemed pretty spicy.
Am I being too cautious with my thoughts above or what? Any experience is appreciated!
