just picked up a 15 sport with 3.92's and 8 speed trans. do these 8 speeds have some sort of trans braking or hill descent control? i noticed when coasting down the mountain if i barely touch the brake it starts down shifting like 2 or 3 gears and now i'm at 3000 rpm instead of 1500 coasting. whats the deal

I haven't seen that on mine. Only time it does something like that is when I'm on cruise control. Maybe this was a new feature for 15?

Mine does the same thing, I noticed it more when my muffler delete was on and my MDS deleted.

yep if you brake it starts dropping gears. it's mainly for towing so it happens much quicker in tow/haul where it only takes a slight tap to drop a gear

That's the way it's designed to work, mine does that on hills. That's another feature I like about the 8 speed.

From the FCA press release for the 2013 RAM:

"Fully electronic, both the 8HP45 and 8HP70 transmissions feature on-the-fly shift map changing, with manual shifting steering capability using wheel controls. More than 40 individual shift maps for very specific conditions optimize shift quality and shift points for fuel economy, performance and drivability. The intelligent software takes into account variables including engine torque gradients, kick down events, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, hill detection, friction detection and downshift detection to determine the appropriate shift map. Additional parameters integrated into the control strategy include vehicle speed control, electronic stability control interaction and temperature. The result is automatic shifting ideally attuned to the performance requirements of almost any driving demand."

It's definitely more obvious in my truck with my new magnaflow...shut the MSD off and it sounds like I'm downshifting a manual...LOVE IT! Now that I think about it...Did I see something about this in the 8.4 settings? Downhill assist maybe?

The setting in the 8.4 is for hill start assist. It applies your brakes if you stop on a hill and then take your foot off the brake to give it gas it will keep you from rolling backwards or forward while you are switching from the brake peddle to the gas peddle . It's a pretty neat feature.

Same here, 2015 Ram Sport 3:92. My Ford would only do this in Tow/Haul mode but the Ram does it at the touch of a brake. You'll get used to it-comes in handy on big grades.

Same here on my 15 Sport with 3.92. If I'm on a long hill and it does it I just manually shift it so it coasts but after a while the computer still takes over. Mildly annoying but normal.

Ok thanks guys. This is going to cause havoc On my mpgs I normally can coast for like 2 miles or more but not anymore it looks like. Funny I just talked to a guy I thought was full of **** said his 13 6speed 3.92 got better mpgs than his 15 8speed 3.92 now I guess I can see that happening in my terrain anyway I'm sure if it was all flat highway it would do better dang it guess I should've went with that baby diesel

My 5/6 speed does it too. It was kinda weird at first with my exhaust.

It's even more drastic in tow/haul mode.

Your not using any gas when it's down shifting going down hill. Your green eco light will be on. That's not going to mess with your mpg at all unless your wanting to go faster down the hill. The biggest thing that is going to hurt mpg is your right foot.

Pretty sure you won't notice any MPG conflicts because of this feature...

But did you really buy a fullsize pickup with a 5.7 Hemi worried this much about MPG? :gayfight:

They get GREAT MPG's though....

still a pretty steep price especially when it's the size of a kids toy. i have to wonder if the fuel economy is really worth that premium when i can get a decent 4 cylinder car that gets 40mpg for $16k or so

no i didn't i normally drive an 06 3500 srw cummins worked out the balls, this is just a runner for me. I had a 13 6speed 3.92 that got about 16 back and forth to work over the mountain was just hoping to see at least that no big deal
