Greetings: Traded up from 2008 Ram big horn 5.7 hemi to 2014 Ram Laramie Longhorn Limited 5.7. my Question on fuel. Used 87 octane for 52000 mile in 2008 no problem. The 2014 has 50 more horse and the fuel requirments are a little confusing. Manual states 87 fine but 89 recomended. States beter performance. just filled 2nd tank with 87. Running pretty darn good. So I am not sure what gains I would have with 89. could anyone give some advise. Not looking for a cheapskate ride if for some reason this luxury cruser would handle the 89 octane better. Any of you folks have any advice? Thanking responses in advance.

Higher octane rating directly translates to an increased resistance to detonation. With higher octane fuel your truck can push the timing further and as such can make more power than with lower octane fuel. We don't have 89 here, so I run 91 in my truck and it loves it. Especially at altitude being driven hard. I've run 87 in there as well and it does fine, but does seem to be a little tamer at full throttle.

Unless you're going to the track, towing, or notice anything with the engine's performance, stick to 87 then. If it works, don't mess with it.

The truck will make alittle more power. And do get alittle better fuel mileage out of the 89.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. At 87 octane and 566 new miles getting 18.9mpg. My 2008 was getting 14.5mpg. On local runaround. So I am ahead of the curve. And 50 more horse. Yeah!
