They can inject a dye in the system also to check for any leaks when they do it also. Most shops are round $100 to recharge a system but freon has jumped in price over the past few months.

Is the smell constant or can you only smell it for a few minutes after you turn the ac on?
You could run by a parts store and get some ac vent cleaner and spray into them to help with the smell. Also, have you checked the cabin air filter, if you've got one?

This was done to my grandparents chevy. Holy crap that air is chillin!

That being said you need to get the system fixed and back to OEM spec first. Get it checked for leaks if you smell funky stuff. It could be the evaporator or the heater core, both smell when they leak. If it were the heater core the ac may just need charged and the condenser fan checked for proper operation

you are getting mold from the condensation. Just run the air with the A/C off for a 1/2 mile or so before you park it. It will dry it out.
