So, as mentioned in my intro, I bought a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7L Quad cab Sport. I believe it has been lifted, and has larger than standard tires. Though reasonably fit, I am no longer young. I can get in without major difficulty at present, but am considering the future, would like a step up. The truck has a clean look so I am not sure about nerf bars or running boards. It is unlikely that the rear seats will be used except on rare occasions when adult children visit. Passenger front will get use sometimes. Any hardware suggestions will be appreciated!

Get a set of power Running boards. Keeps the clean look, works great for getting in and out, especially for short or mobility impaired. This is my first pickup with them, will never have another without them.

Here they are folded up tight to the lower rail.

These two are with the steps deployed.

The bed step is powder coated aluminum checker plate. If you click twice on the pictures you can see them close up. Only place I found that made them was the guys that made my Range Rider canopy. This pickup also has the factory Mopar bumper step at the left rear corner.

They are located in British Columbia and used to have a location in Washington in the States but not sure if it is still there. They did close their Alberta and Surrey locations.

I have been happy with my Amp Research steps, did end up removing the vibration dampeners that mount to the frame, they barely”kissed” when retracting almost sounded like a bell.

I'm waiting impatiently to get my Amp Research extreme steps installed. The air tank relocation kit has been back ordered for over a month.

You lost me at "Air Tank". Stone axe simple - either permanently fixed or fold in fold out manually will do the trick for me.

I am wanting the Amp Research Extreme (dual Motor) power step for my 2500. My wife has dificultly getting in even with the factory running boards. The power one should be a bit lower for that first step when deployed.
My 2500 has the rear air suspension, the air tank has to be relocated just a couple of inches for the power boards to fit and function.

Fixed steps (Nerf bars etc) will probably be what you’ll be most happy with.

I have both… one truck with Nerf…one with automatics. The automatics can be expected to have maintenance costs associated with them some day….and if that day is very far in the future…May involve difficult-to-obtain parts and service. They also will “surprise” you with a “kick in the shins” when all you want to do is open the door to retreive something or to toss groceries into the back seat.

Fixed steps will be useful and durable.

Amp steps used to have issues in the salt belt, have they fixed that issue ?
Supposedly the extreme series with the dual motors does, if I ever end up getting mine installed I will find out.

Power steps are the way to go. I've owned lots of trucks with fixed steps and none were as useful as actual steps as power steps. There are brands of power steps and the price varies quite a bit between them. Our 2020 Limited has OEM power steps, which are fantastic. I installed a set of Rough Country steps on our 2014 F150, which have been working great for a couple years now. I won't own another set of fixed steps again.

You didn't mention a budget, the motorized steps are quite expensive pretty much require professional installation. You can get a really solid set of wide full length step bars that are comfortable, look good, cost a couple hundred bucks, and you can put them on yourself in an hour or less. All trucks are now made with mounting points on the inner rocker panels making installation a piece of cake.

Magfan; I too have achieved an age (81) where I was having difficulty climbing into my 04 Dodge. The wife always did have trouble getting in, so I purchased some Amp Research fold out step which were just the ticket to our troubles. Love them and they look great. Because I live in the east where they use salt liberally on the roads in winter, I do insure the hinges get some lube occasionally. Safe travels.

As Guitar Guy said before you didnt mention budget.
Myself,i can't see spending $$$ on a step(how much are amps?start at like $1200?)..dont remember when i searched for mine way back to change out the nerfs that were on it when i got it.....no thank you.....sure it's nice but once your in or out that part is over...you asked about nerf bar or running board so for me its nerf bar over running boards..I just like the look better.couple $100(guessin) and easy install.
All differant kinds to choose from also.

The problem when the power steps quit working is they can be either in or out.

A buddy of mine has a 3/4 Diesel with a 10" lift and when his quit working he stepped out of the cab expecting the power step to be there and it wasn't.

It was a big and surprising first step into the parking lot where he ended up on his knees.

He got rid of them after that. They can be finicky in cold weather and freeze up.
