Greetings,
I'm a nube here. I am in the process of purchasing my first Ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter engine.
My concern is the cylinder deactivation. Is it reliable? Any concerns or problems?
I plan on trips with heavy hauling and towing. Thank you.

I have a 1500 with that and never notice it. And it’s at low rpm. You won’t ever be low rpm towing...

The mds works fine in the 6.4, if ya can get the truck with the 4:10 gear ratio. It’s minimal of the 373”s, but every little bit helps.

The mds was first introduced in 2006 in the trucks. They have had 12 years to work out the bugs. Personally I don't like it but you either get the 6.4 or don't and I would get the 6.4.

I had a 2015 6.4 to pull our fifth wheel. It was flawless. With a magnaflow muffler you’d hear it “gurgle” in four cylinder mode...didn’t like it but was minimal. Goofy sound.

My buddy and his wife retired and based on my experiences with the 6.4 they bought a 2017 and use it to deliver rv’s from Indiana all over the country. They don’t make a lot of $$$, but they get to go everywhere and love it. The truck has over 60,000 miles on it and was flawless towing well over half of those miles. Actually they towed a few fifth wheels that I wouldn’t have — to dammm big for me.

Anyway, it’s a great truck and a greater motor
