Just bought a new RAM Laramie 2500 in July and have 6000 miles on it. Replaced my 2011 Duramax with 300K miles (actually keeping it too, since it has been a great truck - tuned and deleted). But this new RAM is impressive so far. Like the power, the quiet ride and comfort (better than the 2500 Duramax ever was), and the new electronics (12" video and all) which you can get on all new trucks and vehicles today. One thing I think RAM stands out on are user friendly adds, like rear floor storage boxes, plus the extra compartment storage behind and under the rear seats, the fold down legs which make the rear seat into a flat cargo area, the front bench fold-down seat with another 2 storage boxes (one in the arm rest and the other under the fold up seat cushion); and to top it off on storage, it was 6 weeks and 4000 miles before I found it had 2 glove boxes (one at your knees and the other in the dash... didn't see that little square button that pops it open). I won't even try to tell you about the electronic features and functions - still in the learning curve. Too early for me to comment on the 6.4 Hemi and how it is going to last but so far I'm liking the power and all is good but the gas milage (that said, fuel is cheaper than my diesel Duramax, so it somewhat evens out). Worth the mention but time will tell if the 200,000/20-year engine and drivetrain warranty thrown in by the Dealer (they do it on all their truck and car sales) is a hoax or for real... hopefully won't need it anyway.

Just wanted to reach out to see if there are any real issues with the 6.4 hemi they are using in the Ram 2500s. There are some pretty good deals to be had on them (brand new), but Im hesitant because I have a 2021 Tundra 5.7 with 27k miles and no problems of any kind. This is my second 5.7 tundra and they are just bulletproof. But I did like the idea of bumping up to a bigger Crew Cab with long bed and 2500 setup.

I read a lot about lifter problems and other issues too. Even Ram flat out denying warranty on bone stock trucks. Scary. I dont "need" to buy the truck, so Im happy to hold off if they are a bad idea right now.

I absolutely HATE any kind of start/stop technology, cylinder deactivation, etc etc etc. Never had any of those things and would like to keep it that way. Apparently the 2024s have the MDS and it can't really be deactivated permanently? I don't want to install any kind of aftermarket parts or risk voiding warranty. I know some people just use the "manual shift" option to get it out of the eco mode MDS but that's every single time they start the vehicle. I hate that idea.

But besides the MDS non-sense, is this motor problematic?
Your right, the Tundra is bulletproof, sold my 2016 Tundra solely because I needed a diesel for towing my RV…I don’t know enough about the RAM gasser’s to give you a yea or nay

My 18' 6.4 (6spd) 2500 flatbed 4dr 4WD ate itself at 38,000 miles after "ticking" for last 8000.
Dealer let me see the damage-mechanic showed me oil pan 1/4" metal shavings!
Dealer bought back after 8 trips to fix(dealer had truck off and on for 4 months !!!!!! Said they put an official Ram rebuilt in it but only change heads-leaked oil profusly.
**Engine Failure shut down in the middle of the road while we pulled a 2 horse trailer well within capacity.

This was during covid, had to have a truck for horses so,long story short...bought new 22 2500 6.4 8' flatbed locking rear diff 4dr 4WD(8 spd)with extended warrenty ....no one(no matter what brand) else had a 2500 flatbed ANYWHERE southeast to be had
$64K Tradesman ofcourse pd too much.
+ Really like the 8sp,rides good easy for the wife to handle, backup camera...HATE the &^%* sloped hood(can't see what's in front of truck for 6-8ft).How many drivers gonna run over their dogs etc in the driveway with this design.....their gonna get sued for this idiot design.

17,000 and so far so good.

Why a Ram 2500? They're a couple notches behind the GM and Ford offerings. After owning a 2018 Ram 2500 6.4, 4.10 gears towing a 9000 lb TT all over the PNW I went back to a Ram CTD. If going gas it's a no brainer these days. Ford 7.3. Way more power than the dog Hemi.
Well, choice of truck depends on many factors. I'm kind of a Chevy/GMC guy at heart and my previous trucks were a GMC Canyon and a GMC Sierra 1500. So when looking for an HD truck I naturally gravitated to GM. The GM 6.6L gas also has a bit less HP but noticeably more torque than the Ram 6.4 though still less than the Ford 7.3. GM was the least expensive for the configuration I wanted. But...when I actually started shopping for an HD truck, I found that a Ram with the 6 foot 4 inch bed is the only one that would let me have a crew cab and still have an overall length that would fit in my garage. A Chevy or GMC with crew cab and standard box is a foot longer and wouldn't fit. That's important for me since I don't want to leave my expensive new toy sitting outside through a Minnesota winter. Despite the differences in the engines, the Ram 6.4 has enough power and torque for my needs as I wasnt needing more power. My reason for going HD was for payload.

I had a 21 ram 6.4 and it ran and towed great, recently traded for a 24 ctd. My company truck however is a 24 sierra 2500 with the new 6.6 and it is a total dog.

True, but I find that seems to be true of all the HD trucks these days. That's why I made sure I was getting the Towing Technology Package witch includes the surround view cameras. I find the cameras a must for getting in and out of my garage, parking spaces, etc.

I'm on my second 2500 with the 6.4. My 2018 I traded last year with 116k on it...no issues, no complaints, no tics, and no leaks. My 2023 now has 26k miles on it and again, no issues. The only time I get 14 MPG or better is if I'm on the highway, and the cruise control is set at 65. Other than that I'm averaging around 12-13 in town, and about 10 when pulling my boat. Admittedly I have a heavy foot.

hemi 5.7
nearly every lifter thread i see is about the 5.7

Be careful with stats, all you have is the numerator (how many 5.7's problems you see vs how many 6.4 problems you see), without the denominator (how many 5.7's are sold vs 6.4s).

The 5.7 is far older, and sells in far more volume. They both have the same lifter failure issue, the 6.2 forced induction has it too though of course you see far less reports because there are far less sold.

To the OP: If you are going to buy a hemi then definitely find a current gen, that way you have the latest lifter updates from FCA.

I refuse to worry about the lifter issue. I'm not blind to it, I run the best oil/filters I can find, change oil frequently, minimize idling, and send my oil to blackstone for analysis. But I drive it normally and tow with it regularly and fix/maintain my truck with the knowledge that (statistically) I'm extremely likely to get 15 to 20 years of life out of it based on my usage.

You could buy your 21 tundra which doesn't do your job as well as the 2500, get 5 years out of it and then crack it up. So then you spent 5 years driving an inferior truck (based on use case) all for what, throwing it out at the end anyway? Or maybe you make a life choice/hobby that no longer needs a truck and the hemi would have been within the warranty period still before selling it etc etc. And since tundras are only "less likely" to have problems, there is no guarantee that the tundra treats you better than the 2500, wouldn't that really drive you nuts if you end up with a crappy tundra?

It's the wrong perspective to insist on highest statistical probabilities. Once the stats for reliability are high enough, other metrics are far more important to me. And the hemi is a solid choice, despite the lifter issue which is rare, and the manifold issue which can be fixed with aftermarket manifolds (I just installed BD Diesel).

On top of that, the rest of the truck absolutely crushes the Tundra in every metric. Towing, hauling, looks, interior, probably even ride quality for that matter; its twice the truck the tundra is.

hemi 6.4
Ok guys. Sold the Tundra last week. Got good money for it. I have a deposit on a 2024 Ram 2500 crew , long bed. 6.4 hemi, 2WD. Deals are crazy right now. $42000 includes all dealer fees and BS. My tax/tag is the only thing separate from that. Brand New at Dealer. I’m suppose to pick it up on Monday. I live in FL and definitely don’t need 4x4. Had trucks my whole life. All 2WD.

Anything changed since I first posted this thread? Any horror stories with Warranty issues or problems etc etc?
