I have seen my oil temps read up to 250F on occasion pulling a heavy load up a steep grade. I'm concerned, but not too worried. I have my truck set to monitor coolant, oil, and transmission temps with physical numbers and bar readout. The bar read out at 240+ is only showing slightly above mid temps on the scale. Once over the hill or steep grade, the temps drop down to normal. Pulling our trailer, the oil temps run 220-230 which is only 15-25 degrees above normal temps without towing. I'll be switching to Mobil 1 tonight to see if it helps this weekend camping. My other thought was to change the thermostat to a 180 degree. This should drop the oil temps in the process. Any thoughts

Yes, I have one thought. Before you switch to Mobil 1 make sure it carries the Chrysler MS-6395 certification for warranty purposes. Unless it has changed Mobil 1 does not meet warranty requirements. I use Quaker State full synthetic which does meet MS-6395.

Thanks for the information. It's funny you mention that because our local RAM dealer has Mobil 1 as on option for oil changes. Last night I researched the Chrysler spec and read a response from Mobil 1. They are working on tests for the requirement, but it takes 2 years for the cert. However, Mobil 1 is being used by BMW, Aston Martin, McLaren, Nissan, Bentley, and Porsche. Must be pretty bad oil or Chrysler must have really high standards!

Yeah, I find that odd too. I used Mobile 1 exclusively until last year when I switched to Penzoil Platinum. That's what the Ram dealer switched to- but they previously used Mobile 1. Said they had to switch due to "supplier problems". I wonder if there is more to that story now?

I have used Mobil 1 for many years in my other vehicles and still do. However, when I found out that I might have a problem with warranty in my RAM I decided to only use an oil that was certified for MS-6395. I have 100% confidence in Mobil 1 being one of the best oils you can buy. If it ever gets certified by Chrysler then I will start using it in my RAM.

I agree with you Bigbird. Next time I see our RAM dealer, I'll ask again. Until then I'll find another synthetic which is approved. I would think most synthetics are similar. About 20 years ago our company did tests with different oils. Mobil 1 won out, but that was many years ago.

Many years ago, I new of dealers using whatever was the cheapest by the barrel. They didn't care what brand or spec...
