I have a 2" mount and ball combo rated for 7500# with a 4" drop that i bought from uhaul when i helped a buddy move...i used the same ball to tow a trailer full of stuff from my grandpas house in florida up to buffalo about 1400 miles..my truck only had a 4.7 so i got a 4" drop because nothing it was rated to tow actually made it sag even with a leveling kit except on the trip from florida because i loaded a little too heavy on the tounge...i also towed a buddy's race car about 200 miles and brought the empty car hauler back home..one suggestion i have for that is bring a few extra rachet straps because i think it will give you a lot more peace of mind since they only have 4 for the tires..all mentioned trailers were uhaul trailers and they were all 2" balls..the hitch i had was a class IV curt rated for 10,000# that bolted to the frame as i too believe in overkill so i dont gotta worry about it..you may want to look into a class IV mount and ball combo rated for 10k# or more seeing thats what your trucks max rating is just so youre always prepared :)
