Also ...with the toaster-style, you can obviously load-test batteries not-in-car, which you might have charged, say ...on the bench. For as little as they cost, they just make sense (to me anyway) for the DIY guy with multiple vehicles, to have around.

I even use the toaster unit to test battery on my Lawn Mower and stator output. Nothing fancy, just solid info.

ADDED: I also checked my new mower for specific purpose. For years, on lawn mowers, the only time the stator would put out an adequate amount of volts to charge battery was when mower was running at Full Idle, not idled down. I checked my new mower, and it does have that friggin mini lithium, but good news, the stator output is the same whether at full idle or low idle, a change from the past. Good info to know.

I'd check it as close to the PCM as possible to eliminate any harness issues. If nothing there and want to avoid dealer...
I went this route and it fixed the issue. The company was quick. They got the PCM, fixed it, and shipped it back the same day.
