So my 6 year old daughter goes to close the door on my 2018 ram the other day and she tells me the door cut her. Well it's just a scratch but then I look at the door to see what shes talking about and along the edge of the door there's some sort of plastic / hard rubber layer (maybe to bond the door skin to the door itself? ) and it sticks up. It doesnt sit flush with the door...so I press on it to see if I can push it flat and it cracks.

It's pretty hard to get a picture of it since it's all painted the same color. In the picture I put my fingers behind it so u can see it sticking up. It's probably like a quarter inch sticking up. The truck only has 5k miles on it. But how can this be fixed without repainting the door and lowering the resale value?

i dunno but fca and their dealers keep ignoring my complaints about my paint on my fender flares

they keep just dodging it, "yea we will look at it" with service writer, then just marked off as normal....

im like um its got has huge mold flashing spots and some areas look like someone wedge a screwdriver between the flare and body....

but they keep ignoring it, best thing is bring it in and complain and point out another truck where it doesnt have it.....

like i get the service writer to acknowledge it looks bad, but then nothing is done for it.

I believe that is seam sealer and mine had the same issue. Mine was folded over and missing paint on my 18 and my dealership got it fixed under warranty without any hassle

I had noticed the sealer on my door looked the same as yours the other day when washing the truck. It was only on one door, and looked as if someone cut a section of the sealer off. Mine was painted over and had no material exposed / unpainted.

Just checked my 2018 1500, made in Mexico, and both door seems are very good, not like that at all. I'd raise a huge fuss until they fix it.

BTW, that's not the temporary plastic molding, is it? Mine came with clear plastic molding on the door edges to protect from door dings on the lot. Kinda looks like it in your pic.

Just looked again, yep, pretty sure that's the temporary plastic molding, if so, just pull it off.

If that is indeed the factory seam sealer, that should be on there like iron. I'd get it looked at by a dealer ASAP. Hate to have it body shop fixed unless it's a great body shop, but you'll be at the mercy of the warranty unless you want to pay for somewhere else to fix it.

Thanks everyone! But yeah it's not a temporary piece of plastic. It's painted the same color as the truck. I believe it is "seam sealer". And it doesnt flex much as u can see in the picture where it cracked when I pushed on it to see if it'd just fold down flat. I have an appointment for the two recalls, the gas filler upgrade (last time the fuel nozzle got stuck so bad it literally ripped 3 of the 4 rivets out of the plastic liner when I tried to get it loose. I will let u all know what happens on all fronts

So the dealer put in a claim to see if FCA will pay for a body shop to fix it. I'm not entirely sure what that will entail but I'm really hoping it doesn't involve repainting the door and having the resale value drop. I will let you all know how it plays out

Didn't know a repaint would drop resale.

It should not if the paint job is done right. 99% of vehicle trade in inspections do not involve a paint depth gauge meter to test for it. Nor have I ever seen a stand alone paint job show up on a car fax unless there was additional collision repair.

Now you've got me thinking I need a paint gauge so the next time I buy a used (or even CPO) vehicle I'll have a more ammo for dickering on the price!

Until a few months ago, I was ignorant on the subject. I ran across the below video at about the 8:40 minute mark that shows paint depth meter in use and gives basic guidelines on what a new paint job depth is vs. a rework.
