Just doing some spitballing here... I’ve always preferred the sound of a round speaker over an oval, and have contemplated swapping out my factory speakers in my 2014 BigHorn. Thought about using a plate to convert from the 6x9’s to a 6.5 to allow for more options and better sound quality - at least in the front, anyway.

Anyone else tried it? Would it be a bad idea to do a component setup, and just utilize the tweeters in the stock 3.5” location on the dash, or move them to the sails on the doors, and sort out a way to either go 3-way, or leave the dash locations out altogether?

Thoughts anyone?

I think it all depends on if you want a stock clean install and what your intentions are for the truck. You using the HK or alpine?
With the HK system....
the word on the street seems to be that for clean stock look you can use the dash for the mid, upper door for tweet. There is very little room on the upper door for a mid. If you don’t mind modifications put the tweet and mid in the sail or Apillar. I would use the sail for the widest stage but don’t know if the oh **** handle would be in the way.

I have 6.5 components in my doors using conversion plates. I had to cut the 2 alignment ears off the doors to make them fit, which took all of 30 seconds each with a dremel and cut off wheel. The crossover is mounted in the door under the handle, and tweeter is up in the sail panel. All fed through stock wiring at 75 watts RMS. I do miss some of the low end from the doors that the 6.5 cant compete with, but the 2 12" Type S subwoofers does a fancy job of filling that need in.

I’ve got the non-alpine 6 speaker setup.

WilliamS, how did you wire the tweet and mid using stock wiring? Extend the stock wiring to the crossover, and then to the two speakers?

I’d contemplated something like the Alpine ktp-445U power pack amp mounted in the dash, and using the stock wiring to power either a 6x9 coaxial or a set of 6.5” components.

Also planning on adding a subwoofer to one of the underseat pockets. I’ve got an old image dynamics ID10 and a Aloine MRP-500 for low end duty. Just gotta measure and see if it will fit.

stock wire extended about 6 inches to the crossover in the door. Then speaker wire to the 2 speakers. Easy as pie, thats how. Mine was also 6 speaker non amplified.

I made speaker adapters out of 1/2 birch for my 6.5s (not the cheap/softwood birch).
