so my buddy and i are planning a deer and elk trip to Colorado next fall. so i have been thinking about how to get all the meat back to PA. one thought was a small trailer full of coolers and dry ice. then i thought maybe a topper and build in a plywood box with insulation and dry ice. any one ever built in the bed with any such idea in mind also i will have to be able to remove it since i use my bed for fire wood and hauling dirt bikes ..... thanks

Fill the truck bed (or a portion of it) up with ice and bury the meat in it, then stretch a tarp over it and drive like hell.

Lots of variables, how long do you have before you head back? If you can freeze the meat solid before you head back and pack with ice you will be good for many days. If no where to freeze or you would rather not freeze it, plan on deboning all the meat, and pack it with ice in good coolers (yeti or similar) as long as those coolers are kept out of the sun they will keep the meat cool for days.

Have a lifted platform inside the cooler to keep the meat out of the melted ice. Or dry ice might be a good alternative, I have never used it though.

If you don’t want to remove the bones and you are packing complete quarters that is a lot of extra room, that would be extremely tough.

This is not an answer to your question however, I lived in Colo for many years and still have a large number of friends that go hunting up there every year. They have said that the process of getting a license up there has turned into a real "gang-bang". You might check on the process and give yourself plenty of time to work through it. The last couple years have been particularly bad.

I wish you good luck!
Colorado has the most elk so with that comes the most hunters. I've been on more than 20 elk hunts in Colorado, I love elk hunting in that state, but you have to be prepared to distance yourself from the crowds. Colorado attracts a ton of first timers and intermediates. It seems to always be the state that everyone starts with. Plan your camping part thoroughly, these camping sites might help.
