Hello,

I have the Mopar performance catback exhaust installed. It has about 6 years/60k on it (I pulled it off a 2012 when I bought my current 2014). It still sounds and looks great but, I'm just getting a little obsessive over the blacked out appearance and wondering if I can get some black tips to replace the chrome look? The current tips are welded. I'm assuming the pipe can be cut before the weld and a new black tip can be bolted on? It's a 2.5" inlet and I'd like to keep the 5" outlet. At the point of the weld, it's approx. 14.5" from the end of the tip. Anyone know of some black tips that'd work with this? I'm not a welder and I'm trying to avoid paying a shop for labor. Below is a pic of the current tip. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you.

I dont have the mopar exhaust, but I did just as you describe. I cut the factory belled tip off, then had new tips welded on. I've got the Carven 5" black tips

Just pull both pipes out if the muffler, have them blasted, and powdercoated black ... That's what I did with my Magnaflows

Thanks for the idea, I hadn't even thought about using the existing tips.........I took a quick look underneath, the pipes are welded into the muffler. However, it looks like there are some bolts/brackets on the exhaust above the axle that I'm hoping I can disconnect and take the pipes (plus welded tips) out from.

May I ask what you paid to have yours blasted & powdercoated? I'll call a shop or two around me of course, but just want to get an idea on what costs should be around. It'd clearly need to be cheaper than a new set of good tips ($200) to make sense. If more expensive than that, I'm back on my search to find some bolt on tips that would work.

Since the factory tips are welded on, I don't think there's any way to get direct fit tips that have a 5" in outlet with a 2.5" inlet. Your only option would be powder coating your existing ones or getting new tipes welded on.

I paid $50 to have mine blasted & powder coated. That was the removable tips on the standard dual exhaust though.

i'm in the process of plasti-dipping mine right now. $5 mod lol. I did it on a previous truck and it held up just fine for over a year before I sold the truck.

Is plasti dip ok to use on a part that is going to get hot?

Not really, BUT, the factory tips under normal running don't get very hot. I did a series of tests on mine using an infrared thermometer and never got a reading higher than 40F over ambient temp.

Yep - the tips don't get as hot as people think. I, as well as other guys on both this forum and some of the facebook group pages, also plastidipped their tips and have had them done for well over a year or longer and they still look just like they did on day one.

Plasti-Dip really isn't good for anything ... Sorry ... JMO

it has it places IMO - only a few places though. The exhaust tips will be fine - I'm not a fan of chrome and that got rid of the last piece of chrome on my truck. I can't really shell out the money for the new tips that come painted and all that already. now I do agree plasti-dip doesn't belong on wheels, larger pieces of the truck etc. but the exhaust tips I don't mind.

I dunno. I can't touch my exhaust tips barehanded after the truck has been running for a while. I'm also not a fan of plasti-dip

High temp engine paint in gloss black. Sand the existing tips use some high temp engine primer then the high temp gloss black paint. Be sure to use the same reputable brand and apply several thin coats to achieve the best results.

Are you running factory tips or aftermarket?

Carven tips

That might be the difference. Are they single wall? I believe the factory tips are double wall, that would cause the outside to run cooler. I see from your sig that you're running a Magnaflow muffler as well. I believe those are smaller than the factory muffler (not hard to do!). That might mean more heat making it to the tips.
