All rubber cracks with age hardening, depending on type and temperature exposure.

Isn't braided just protective sleeving over rubber hose?

The cheaper ones yes. The ones I’m running are supposedly Teflon hose with braided shield over it and a nylon coating over that. They’re also dot approved.

My wife had a 2008 Altima and when the dealership put new tires on for me (at the time their tires were the best price around?) they told be I need brakes in the back, fronts are fine. I called bull, and took it home checked the rears and sure enough it did need them. 80,000 miles the front looked new the rears were thin? From them on I’ve always checked all brakes on tire rotations.

Also, don't forget to change the brake fluid! Every 2 years is the recommended interval and is very easy and quite cheap to do.

While I understand the reasons to do it, I have never changed the brake fluid on any vehicle I've ever owned as a regular maintenance item. The only time the fluid has been changed (partially) is when a brake line, caliper or master have been replaced. And so far, so good.

But I have seen the effects of what can happen over time with water getting into the system. My 51 Plymouth (that I just acquired last year) had so much rusty crap in the brake system I had to rebuild the master cylinder and a few of the brake cylinders. Obviously, water got into the system over time and likely the fluid was never changed during the 71 years before it got to me.

Yes, the cosmetic braided ones are garbage, these are the same I use.
