Stepping on the brake causes a chime to sound. Any ideas on what causes that to happen? Is that a critical failure of some other part?

Any lights on the dash? "BRAKE" light illuminated? Throwing any codes??
Do you have an ODB reader and can U check for codes???

THAT is what I would do.....AND regardless get it checked, because if there is some type of system failure, not think a brake system issue is a good thing, Just Saying....

Gonna second this, braking causes the fluid to be pushed into the lines as well move in the reservoir, might be getting low enough to set off the alarm for a brief time till the fluid moves back or the brake is depressed.
