Hi everyone I am new to this forum and a First time buyer of a Chrysler product. In January I bought a 2014 Ram Sport with the 5.7. One cold morning a few weeks after purchase I notice blue smoke surrounding the truck on initial start up. Blue smoke I know is oil being burned off and I'm thinking to myself that this is almost impossible on a new truck with 800 km on the odometer. I began the investigation by having someone start the truck up for me and I would stand behind the truck. To my surprise after letting it sit for a while I would get huge clouds coming out of both tail pipes. To the dealer I go and let the know about it. They tell me that the truck needs to be broken in and to come back every 1000 km to do an oil consumption test. I checked the oil at about 1700km and it was down 3/4 of a litre. The flowing intervals of 1000km showed between 1/2 - 3/4 litres down each check at 1000km. At this point after I completed the oil consumption test of a total 5000km and 5 checks. I basically told the service manager that I am not accepting this crap and something must be done immediately and I want a rental. I told him I think it's probably the valve steam seals and to my surprise all he said to me was I agree and I'm going to order new seals now for you. Left my truck there for 3 days when I got a phone call saying my truck is ready and it's fixed. When I arrived to the dealership the service manager told me that when they pulled the plugs they noticed that the spark plugs on cylinder #7 was fouled up and black. They changed the valve stem seals and so far after 3000km after the change no more blue smoke and no oil consumption. I changed my oil to the new pennzoil platinum with pure plus 5w20 and it runs like a champ. Thought I share this experience with you guys. Looking forward to being a member here.

Nothing wrong with finding an issue on a new truck. So many details during assembly. Stuff can happen. I've got a couple issues on mine that its going in for in a week or so. The important thing is that they got it resolved. Hope its all good for ya now.

Blue smoke

I have a 2014 Dodge ram 1500. I also have blue smoke at start up, from the time truck had first 200 miles on it. I was told also by the service manager that the truck had to be broke in. It now has 9000 miles & still does it. I drive the truck only on weekends & it sits all week. After sitting all week, when you crank it the smoke pours out both pipes. The dealer that I took it to (other than where I bought it), changed the pcv valve, but did not help. I have turned it over to a lemon law lawyer & so far chrysler has done nothing. really disappointed with the situation since I left Chev for Dodge.

With lemon law, you have to actually give the dealer a chance to fix it before you can find recourse.

Sounds like a few 'friday afternoon' engine builds happening. I can accept maybe loose or missing trim or slight paint defects, but engine internal work like that should never be necessary on a new truck.

Everyone has a bad day, I guess.

I have had the truck to one dealer 2 times, another 3 & still no resolve. I paid cash for the truck & don't feel I should have to spend my time running back & forth to the dealer every time they try something. Really sorry I bought it. I also feel that I should not have my truck dismanteled. I heard from the dealership where I bought it (first time in) "well it has to have break in time" (second time) "well we have to make sure it is not condensation". That is when I took it to another dealer & was in there 3 times with no resolve.

Hopefully they get you taken care of. I just traded out my wifes 2014 Jeep Cherokee POS due to being in the shop 4 times in 6K miles for trans shift issues. They didnt get the programming right on the 14 9speed ZF transmissions before putting them into service is what I was told. I was looking into lemon law, but ended up with another dealership trading me into a 2015 Camaro for an awesome price instead. Maybe you could tell them about the issues the OP had and they can check plugs? Good luck!

they do burn a little during break in

Absolute BS. Mine has not burned a single drop of oil in the 8300 miles I've had it for since last May, between 100° summer heat and -10° wind chills.

Same Problem as Richard

Hi, I'm also new to the forum as I found you guys by searching for others with the exact same problem as described by Richard. I've been having the same problem and my 2014 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi now has 8850 miles. It has now been out of service over 30 days while they replaced both cylinder heads, and various other parts. Still smokes badly at every start-up if it sits more than 30 minutes. I have tried to work with Chrysler Customer Care and now the "Ram Resolution" department which supposedly works lemon law cases, with little or no response. If anyone had followed a successful course in getting their vehicle replaced under the lemon law I would appreciate the information. At this point I have little or no confidence this engine can be made acceptable.

Hi All,
Blue smoke is not good. Some oil consumption during seat-in is normal. How much varies from engine to engine as the internals are not identical. The valves seal was corrected the way it should have been. The other I would be telling them that unless they replace the motor, since both heads were supposedly changed out clearly there is an issue with the bores or the rings in that block. I will not be taking that truck back. There is not one production car that does not have lemons sorry but I don't care if it blue oval or bow tie or pentastar. The issue is how do they resolve those problems. Most people get good resolution but you don't hear about it because lets face it people will post bad experiences far more than good.
I sincerely hope that everybody gets their issues resolved.
