Hello!

My name is Alan and I'm brand new not only here, but to Dodge as well! I just bought a 2013 Ram 1500 5.7l Hemi Quad cab and was told by the dealership that they use a Synthetic Blend oil in all new Rams. Is this true? Also, I have been told by self proclaimed "car guys" that you should NOT use full synthetic oil till after the break in period, reason being that the conventional oil helps "seal" the gaskets & what not.

So, I have a few questions hopefully I can get answered here.

1. Can I go ahead & change the oil to full synthetic today with my truck at about 200 miles, or should I wait till the "break in period" is over?

2. What is the break-in period on a new Ram 1500 5.7l Hemi?

Thank you guy for any & all assistance! It is GREATLY appreciated!

I'll be watching your thread. I've been wondering the same thing myself. I'm about to roll over 200 miles on my Express and was throwing around the idea of going to M1 synthetic.

Personally, I won't be. I'll break it in with dino and after 5-6000 miles make the switch.

Thanks guys!

Found this in the owners manual:

"Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km).
After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or
55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.
While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the
limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in.
Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental
and should be avoided."

Also:

"The engine oil installed in the engine at the factory is a
high-quality energy conserving type lubricant. Oil
changes should be consistent with anticipated climate
conditions under which vehicle operations will occur. For
the recommended viscosity and quality grades, refer to
“Maintenance Procedures” in “Maintaining Your Vehicle”.
NOTE: A new engine may consume some oil during its
first few thousand miles (kilometers) of operation. This
should be considered a normal part of the break-in and
not interpreted as an indication of difficulty."

All that said, I will wait a few 1000 miles to put Amsoil in... :D

It says right on Redline Oil Bottle, not for use until at least 3000k miles. Marrying metal parts that have never been together will create some shear, and that shear should be encouraged not made harder by adding an oil that has great friction modifiers like group 4 or 5 syn. After the break in in my opinion there is a huge benefit to use synthetic oil.

Get a filter with synthetic media inside such as Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil then you can extend drains. Don't buy a good oil then get a cheap filter especially Fram. So many people make that mistake.

Going to bump this..

So the first recommended oil change is 3K you guys? And safe to go full synth then with full synth media?

I've had my truck for 3 weeks.. already at 1200 miles. Just want to make sure i dont miss an important milestone.

I was told on this website that you can change to full synthetic at any time without issue. I was also told that most people on this website agree that the engine is broken in at the factory.

I'm following to see what other responses are but I'm planning to throw in Mobil1 or Redline at 5k. I'm a little shy of 2000 right now.

Many Autos be it American/German/Italian/UK/Japan-->Come with either a 100% Synthetic or Full Synthetic oil within the Oil Pan from the Auto manufacture. With a {Warranty}!!

This tells me Everything I need to know! In Some Cases--> Engine Design play a part in this... Be it a Super Charged Engine or Turbo Charged Engine.

I personally feel it is perfectly fine to change over to a so called Synthetic at any time with a New Engine!

With that said-->Only my Opinion! I will say-->Follow your Manufactures Manual!!

As for Engine Break in!!! There are Millions of Thoughts and Ideas out there... I know what I believe but Follow Your Manual!

Did my first oil change at 2k with conventional oil. Next 2 oil changes will get the same treatment, then I'll switch to Amsoil.

I did first change at 6000 and refilled with Pennzoil conventional. second change at 12,000 with same. I'm sticking to the 6000 cycle.
