I just did my first oil change, went with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w20 and Royal Purple 10-48. About half a mile after I left the shop, I noticed an intense burning smell inside the cab. It smelt like burning rubber or plastic.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any idea what could cause this?

My truck is a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic Lonestar Crew Cab with the 5.7 and 8spd with 5,370 on the odometer

Did you spill any oil over the top of your engine when you were filling it back up? When the engine heated up any oil spilled on the engine will start burning off whatever it was on

The shop may have dripped a little bit on top of the engine. I'll have to take a look later and see. That could very well have been the issue.
I usually do my own oil changes, except for the very first one since the factory normally tightens things down way too tight for me to remove.

Yep always let the dealer do the first oil change lol.

That’s usually your issue though just keep driving it and the smell should go away on its own

Make sure the oil filter isn't leaking. The people in the dealerships that do oil changes aren't (99%of the time) actual mechanics so they don't have a firm grasp on the righty tighty, lefty loosy principle... Just sayin...

reminds me of taking my tacoma to a minute muffler shop (canadian thing?) cause they have lifetime warranties on mufflers. just pay labour. so i get the muffler replaced and was due for an oil change too. well reviewed shop, couple of older fellers who are well known for their work on custom cars so no worries, right? get the truck home. leak on the driveaway. i'm thinking just spill over from the fill. couple of days later. still some oil. so i call the shop and say hey, i think i have a leak..and i didn't want to mess with it in case they stripped the oil plug. i take it in and it turned out it was the crush washer, and 8 cent part that they didn't bother replacing cause "they can be reused". so they did that, did another fresh oil change on them and all good. i know from always doing my own oil changes on motorbikes that crush washers can last one time....or can last 15 times. For the price of a crush washer, why screw with it. change the damn crush washer!!!!

1) check of leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
2) check for spills on either side of the engine.
3) check the oil level.

Update:
No leaks, visible drips, or otherwise. They must have just dripped a little bit on the engine whem filling, and it burnt off like y'all said. The smell stopped too, so I'm not too concerned.

Buuddy, I've been down that road with crush washers on bikes. Snug is good enough, right? But nooooo. Some gorilla had to crank on that poor little plug until it distorted metal! I have spare crush washers here. If the old one looks new, it goes back in.

I hate changing oil for the first time after I buy a used bike.

If you think the "oil smell" is a bit stressful, wait until you smell burnt rubber after the first time you change the cam belts on a Ducati!

I never replaced a drain plug washer on any of my vehicles. I've always done my own oil changes and never had a leak. I tighten the hemi drain plug to 25 ft lbs. I just installed a fumoto valve & torqued to 25 ft lbs too, no leaks and no damage to washer.

On my Victory I don't remove the plug. Just use a Mighty Mite, get it going and sit in a lawn chair drinking rye and cokes:)

I've done at least 10 oil changes on our 4Runner and never had the drain plug leak. I put on new crush washers for diff and tranny plugs but don't replace whatever is on the oil drain plug. It is one of the felt/rubber washers though. I prefer the rubber coated flange bolt that the Ram drain plug is made from.

Anyone have the specific part number of the oil drain plug for a 2018 V6 3.6 Pentastar? Online I keep finding some with a separate washer, some with no washer, and one with a rubberized flange. Just want to have a spare on hand, going to do the third oil change soon.

Ah, think I found it

Thanks for the reply, yeah I finally found that number too, and ordered one from Crown Automotive parts off Amazon, which looks like the identical plug. I got it free because I had points from my Amazon credit card. Hoping Crown Automotive makes good parts, but I see they've been in business a long time, in fact they may even buy it from the same source as Mopar, or even make it for them?

Yeah was just trying to show the search had your Ram info with it.
Rockauto has also:
