Update:
I generously estimated the following weights:
topper 250#
running boards 100#
drawer system 250#
2 retrievers and their crates 200#
various equipment, etc. 300# (removed all this and went back to the scale to calculate this weight)
Everything else is stock

This all adds up to 1100#. With a base weight of 5452, this adds up to 6552#. I had a full tank of fuel @ 200# and myself at @ 200# and maybe 5# of mud in the wheel wells. That puts me at 6950. I can't figure out where the extra 200 lbs came from.

Passenger weight and fuel weight is calculated into the GVWR, correct? With that said, I calculate 1100# payload and my truck is rated for 1450. So I should be under, but I'm not. What am I missing? The scales don't lie.
I was wondering where I. Your first post you state you weight towing is 8900 lbs I have a very similar trucks. I have a leer cap and running board no draw system well yet. Lol. Bit I was told 8100 lbs. 2018 Laramie 4x4 3:21

I got the 5452 base weight from the RAM J2807 chart for my truck. So 6900 - 5452 is 1448 for payload. The J2807 states 1450 for max payload. I estimated my payload at 1300. You can see my numbers in the previous post. I will always have close to that payload and can't afford to buy a new truck after 2 years with this one. Plus, it rides great.

Thank you Jimmy07
You addressed a question I hadn't asked. I know the truck can pull the TT. It's all the numbers that weren't making sense to me. At what point do you decide to add air bags?

I have a friend with a TT similar in size to what I'm looking at. In a few weeks we'll hook it up with the WDH and take it to the scales full of water. I think this should give me a better idea how everything looks on the axle weights.

Todd -

Not sure where you got the 8900 number. All the spec numbers I stated were from an actual CAT scale weighing of my truck, or from the 2017 RAM 1500 J2807 towing chart. According to that chart, my max trailer weight rating is 9830. My payload numbers were estimates for each item from the vendor.

Hope that helps.

I see now lol. I thought you meant you CAT scaled it with you in the truck and full tank nothing else.

The towing charts are for a configuration not a trim...so unless you have a tradesman with no options it weighs more than 5452.

You just need to make the truck as light as possible and keep your axle ratings in check.

Being able to use your buddies camper will help make the decision alot cheaper.

The CAT scale really makes things straight forward. You can exceed GVWR with in the GAWR ratings...but I would stay well within the GCWR.

Good luck. Very interested in the final results.

I still dont see how your going to be able to pull the trailer you want.

You have 400 or so lbs of rear axle capacity left. A 6500lb trailer at 13% tongue weight is 845 lbs tongue weight not including the weight of the hitch itself.

You can transfer some of that to the front axle but not all of it...

So your going to be at or over your grawr ( bad) which is really the number I'd be most concerned with.

Again, with how heavy your loaded to begin with you need to be looking at small TTs....under 5k gross or pop ups. There's no getting around those numbers you posted. Nothing you can reasonably do to increase rear axle capacity.

It is what it is.
