I have a 16 2500 Laramie and it has pretty much every option except cargo camera. Was wondering where the camera is controlled from and can I add a factory light with camera? Also wondering if the wiring for camera would be there even though truck does at have the option?
1) The wiring will not be there, a wire harness for the cargo camera has to be added. Its not installed if there is no factory cargo camera.
2) The OEM cargo camera harness itself is part of the main wiring harness that is embedded in the headliner. This results in that the only way to get an OEM cargo camera harness is to buy a headliner that comes with the wiring harness embedded in it. The headliner is expensive, in the range of $800 plus.
3) Since the OEM harness is prohibitive in cost and installation, the answer is a custom wire harness made just for the cargo camera. You can get one from DeereGuy (he is on this forum). He and his partner are M2Mods, a supporting vendor here. They are EXCELLENT. I got mine from them.
4) You can use the OEM cargo camera which is contained in the CHMSL. Its all one unit. Or you can source an aftermarket setup where they usually retro-fit a cargo camera into the standard CHMSL
5) After the installation you would then need to make changes to your BCM so the cargo camera becomes operational. You do this by either using the AlphaObd program (see the DIY section, BIG thread there) or try to get the dealership to activate it. Success at the dealership is usually hit or miss as far as them willing/able to do this and what they would charge.
6) The cargo camera would be controlled by soft buttons on your radio.
What I posted above is just a general outline to answer your question. I pasted below a link to some posts on this. See posts 8397 (OEM cargo camera CHMSL is pictured) and 8398 ( a previous post of mine). The thread they are in is the AlphaOBD.
