Was under my truck (2002 ram 1500 4x4 SLT 4.7 QC) this weekend replacing a bad wheel bearing (which was able to be wobble and glad I did not drive it felt like it would've fallen off) and found coolant leaking from both sides of the engine block towards the rear.
I just purchased the truck used in February and the seller said he worked on magnums and the engine had blown a coolant hose and previous driver blew the engine. He said it was machined and everything replaced that was damaged.
Now I am debating what to do because although the guy said he was the one that rebuilt it is now telling me someone else built the lower half of the engine. He said that high quality gaskets were used. He also said the guy working for him was a thief, then after that said he was extremely **** mechanic and cant believe that there would be leaking due to a rebuilt fault.
My question is where do I go now. I don't have any engine problems besides the coolant leak. it has 10k miles on rebuilt engine. 90k miles total.
The truck bed is rusted on both wheel wells but has been grinded, sprayed, and covered with fenders.
Debating if I should try and repair the engine myself (brother and I have rebuilt his 97 GT Mustang with new heads, cams, and headers etc.
I could attempt to replace the gaskets and hope that it will fix the problem but debating if while I am taking it all apart I should just go ahead and drop the money on upgrading it as well.
Wanted to do HO Cams, Intake Manifold, TB, Headers.
Wondering if anyone has suggestion on best route on repairs or if at this point they would recommend trading in or buying new vehicle and keeping truck as side project (like to hunt and need the room but do a lot of driving so wouldn't mind better mpg)
