...or Lumens, or Wattage, or however-you-want-to-measure-headlight-output.

No, this isn't a technical post, I promise. It is a philosophical one. That's why I'm posting it here (if the mods wish to move it, that's perfectly cool...)

Okay, so I got stock halogen headlights. They work pretty good. But, I live in the sticks. It's 30 miles to the nearest streetlight of any kind, the mountain roads are winding and narrow, the local deer population is often suicidal around moving machinery, and sometimes the weather sucks.

But the lights do okay - I normally use high-beam unless something comes towards me (logging trucks carry a pair of small nuclear fusion reactors for lighting, so I don't get into any sort of headlight contest with them.)

Now... it would be nice to have more light, especially on those dark pre-dawn mornings where the roads are known to break the nerve of lesser men.

BUT... I don't want to be one of those guys. You know, the ones whose low-beams are brighter than a pair of supernovae, let alone their brights. The ones who think their ******** size directly correlates to the amount of paint their high-beams can burn off of house siding, and are not afraid to point those suckers dead into your eyes (well, not quite my eyes, but if I had an ordinary car, I know I'd be damned near homicidal by now...)

As you can see, I'm kind of torn as to whether or not to get a pair of HID's and just make sure they're aimed right, or just go with what I got and stick with halogen.

So... what do y'all think? I can't be the only one thinking in this direction... again, not looking for technical advice (I can find a metric ton of that no matter which decision I make), but more of a philosophical take.

The factory projectors on my Laramie are pretty damn bright, IMO. I think some trucks use a less efficient housing design and H-11 bulbs. Mine uses 9012 bulbs. My drivers side just went out and what fun it was to pull the grill and a panel in the wheel well to get the housing out. You can probably find the upgraded housings cheap and typically if you upgrade with an HID retrofit kit, you will need the projectors anyway. I did that on my Maxima and it worked pretty well but was a small bit of wiring. The Ram uses an integrated harness so adapting anything other than a direct bulb swap might be trickier. The HID's typically have a ballast as well as signal for on/off.

I just ordered a set of bulbs for my 2500.
I’m going with H9 @7500K and 9011 high beams.
Both are 65w I do believe. I know the H9 lows are 65w

We all want more light, but the truth is more (useful) light = blinding oncoming traffic no if and's or but's about it. I get blinded so many times a day now I don't even bother to flash them anymore, it's useless.
I do get the urge to run them into the ditch though .... just kidding .....maybe....

I stayed with OEM for my headlights, but when I want to go all nuclear...

All wired in through the hi-beam switch AND an AUX switch so I can still run just the OEM hi-beams if desired.

I'm that guy without being that guy.

Those would work behind one of my grilles.

I like the HL stock for now. Do have some extra LEDs that will be mounted to the bar that hasn't shipped yet.

That's well into the blue spectrum. You're starting to lose light at 7500 K. Have you actually seen it up close & personal? You might be royally disappointed, unless that color is the goal. Love to see a pic when it's done.

To the OP, it really all depends on how much you want to spend and what type of light you want. If you don't encounter too many vehicles on your drive and are driving with the high beams on most of the time, I would suggest going with a decent led light bar. Easy to install and works really well. If you want to spend little money, you can always replace the bulbs with something better, but please don't put HIDs in reflector housings.. If you want better low and high beam, maybe a combination of the two or look into doing a projector retrofit. Damn good HID projectors are out there for really cheap these days and make a huge difference.

I don’t know anything about bulb color. So I guess I’ll find out but for $10 a pair I won’t loose much.

It took me a while to change my headlight the first time I did it. Now its a 20 minute job. Maybe 30 if I have a beer.

Anything beyond 5000K is too blue and the light scatters too much to be of any use. I have 4300K HIDs in my factory projectors. Anybody driving around other people with HIDS in reflector headlights or with those LED bars shining into the faces of oncoming traffic are blinding the hell out of oncoming traffic. Personally it would be better for all of us if HIDs and LEDs had never existed due to peoples lack of compassion for other drivers.

I am in the same boat with my quads. Getting older and my eyes do not do well with the quads when I encounter oncoming traffic, especially when its raining out. The damn lights may as well be off. I have reached out to Jeremy for some ideas and am mulling things over, but within the next 30-60 days I will be doing something about it. It seems no matter what, to do it right and not have ancillary issues it will cost ~ $1,200 - $1,400. The modifystreet / alpharex lights look interesting but by the time you buy the housings and add bulbs and then buy the AlphaOBD you are damn near a grand anyway. And the v2 or whatever option they have coming out will be a grand too. It is likely one of those things where I need to pull my big boy pants up and just place an order from Jeremy and call it a day. I will never make this mistake again with a vehicle - headlights will be one of the first things I look at before purchase.

Yeah, true. Aside from removing those awful push in panel fasteners, it wasn't too bad. On my Maxima I had to remove a wheel and the entire fender liner to get to the back of the housings, that sucked. I was mainly comparing the replacement steps to how easy it is to replace bulbs in my 2002 Dakota. Only have to pop the hood to gain access.

I'm pretty happy with the factory low beams compared to our 2010 4Runner, it's lights are very dim even for the city.

I just installed new Vanquish Auto LED bulbs in my truck a couple of weeks ago. The light is 6000k and kind of blue looking, but much brighter than stock with good focus. I replaced all bulbs lows, highs, and fogs. Not sure what oncoming traffic thinks, but I haven't been flashed yet.

Do you have any type of mechanical skills at all (not trying to be rude or anything)? If so, you can come out wayyyyy less than $1200 if you have some patience. You can pick up a set of aftermarket quad housings for about $150, a set of Mini H1 projectors with harness for about $300 and, after a quick bake in the oven, can have really good output for less than $600. Or you can pick up a set of the oem projector replicas that fit the non-projector trucks, throw in a set of HIDs and you will have decent output. Better than the quads and better than the OEM projectors. And the good thing about going this route is if this isn't enough for you, you have the perfect platform to install some VERY good projectors inside of them, again, if you're willing to take them apart (very easy).

LMAO :anitoof::lol:

Without going the expensive route of HID's and/or a whole new set of headlights (Morimoto/Modifystreet) There are the H11 (low beam) to H9 bulb modification to fit in the housing and plug and the high beam from the 9005 to the 9011 mod. Brighter bulbs without having to do any conversions and or replacement lights. Just trimming the tabs on the bulbs.

http://shnu.us/HIR Trimming Stock.htm

Or look at Phillips LED bulbs which are brighter but may require CANBUS adapters or other adapters.

I'm just retrofitting HID projectors and LED projectors because I do like seeing during the low/no light hours and have suicidal wildlife where I live as well. Not to mention that there are driver's in this area that run LED lightbars on their bumpers, cabs and roll bars when driving which are not legal on the road. (NY has specific requirements for lighting: location & adjustment)

True, if that's the Kelvin rating. It's going look blue and have less usable light.
