Just purchased a 2014 RAM 1500 in Bright White a few days ago. I gave it a pretty thorough look over on the lot, and was actually surprised of the overall condition/consistency of the paint... or so I thought.

After having it home for a few days, I decided to start looking at prepping it (claybar/polish/wax), and noticed that on both of the rear doors (crew cab), a strange redish stain right before the lower window seal. I've looked at it pretty closely at this point, and confirmed it is actually underneath the clear coat, so nothing I can do about it. Anyone else with a crew cab model seen this type of paint defect?

Because it is almost exactly the same size/location on both of the rear doors, I assume this is some defect in the factory's painting process.

I'm not surprised. My black truck had the paint bubble up on the driver's side fender like some contamination got under the paint during the painting process. The dealer had to change the fender under warantee.

I've had two Rams now and the paint is a damned joke. I don't expect flawless, ever, but I don't expect such obvious defects. I'd say take it to the dealer, they'll probably just try to touch it up, but if it bothers you, make them fix it. Reality is, it's under the clear coat so it won't hurt much any time soon other than appearance unless it's rust under the clear, in which case it will eventually peel or flake and rust worse.

I guess I should go over mine with a fine tooth comb now. I have banned Nissan from any future purchases in my family after a terrible paint experience - I get that the environment friendly paint isn't as good as the old stuff, but bubbles and falling off paint, or in this example stuff under the clear coat is less than stellar manufacturing process.

I don't know that I would necessarily go through a lot of trouble for the pic above, except that if you go and get a service look at it you've got a documented concern about the paint job. If there were other contamination problems, they may not show up until the tail end of the warranty period, which is what happened on my Frontier.

It does not appear to be rust... more of a red/maroon color... and as you get closer to the window seal you can see what appears to be either primer, or just bare metal under the clear (can't see that well, would have to pull out a magnifying glass).

The rest of the paint looks good, but I won't be looking at every inch until I finishing claying.

I'm not horribly surprised about defects in general though... my other vehicle (and the one before that) where both "foreign", and both had quality issues as well. Paint quality in general seems to have gone way downhill when manufactures switched to water based... at least the RAM appears to have a decent clearcoat.

I'll probably bring it up during my next service just to have it documented. Its unlikely worth the effort to ask them to correct it and could make it even worse... though I might have a friend of mine that oversees a body shop to give me his thoughts.

On the plus side, at least it isn't a pearl/metallic paint job... so corrections are much easier should they need to be done.

People have been complaining about the quality of the paint jobs on our trucks for the last few years. You'd think that maybe someday the factory would listen to the feedback they get and make some changes. Fat chance!!!!!!
