I was under my truck looking around and this chewed up nut caught my eye. It's on the spindle coming out of the water pump that goes to the fan. I've never been anywhere near it and the truck has only been serviced/repaired at the dealer. Any idea how/why it got so chewed up? The only time I can think they would have needed to wrench it is when my engine was replaced and they were swapping parts over to the new engine. Is this going to be a problem in the future? (water pump replacement?)

On my 2012 Ram 1500…. that fan used Left-Hand threads. IF an inexperienced “technician” forgot or didn’t know…. he/she might have become frustrated and attempted to use a pipe-wrench or some other inappropriate tool to remove it…causing that kind of damage…. Before they either figured the LH thread situation …or someone told them.

Yeah, looks like either some serious griping with some vice grips or maybe a pipe wrench trying to get it off. Wouldn't anticipate any sort of issues though, the hex is still a hex even though it's not smooth. Should still be perfectly doable to get it off next time.
