Anyone have any info and feedback on the many types out there?
As the roads get worse and filler with more and more brainless sue happy dishonest people I'm thinking of picking one of these up...
I'm looking for a small one nothing fancy, just for insurance protection that I can tuck between the rearview and windshield

Here are a few I'm thinking about

Dashcamtalk.com has some decent info. Depends on what features you want and how much you want to pay. I have an old mobius that's alright and also have a b40 that I like

I'm not going to get into the quality of the different cameras but as a Police Officer I will tell you that it is invaluable to have one. I can't stress enough how many people are running around performing insurance fraud these days. In Russia and many other countries it's mandated that you have one. While I don't agree with ANY Government mandate for vehicle and traffic technology(traffic light/speed cam hater here), I do wish more insurance companies would offer a discount for having one installed. Some do offer discounts BUT...it is a knife that cuts two ways. Sometimes they can seal your fate if you think you were in the right and come to find out you did something minor that offset the offense of the other making it a mutual fault situation.

I have the middle grade ThinkWare... I am going to return and get the Compustar system. For whatever reason I cannot get it to work with the car off. Also with my accommodation the Compustar ends up being a better value, as it includes the rear camera as well.

Yeah, as a first responder I see all the wrecks too and all the idiots that almost hit us or our rig as we work a scene. I'm also thinking of getting some to put into our first out engines and our out of county rig. Just good insurance and safety to help protect us as society gets more and more hateful and deceitful.

Do you have a model number for that Compustar? I was also thinking of using a read camera too and would also want that for the Rigs at the station.

Compustar Dash CD-3200 ... Not a lot of reviews out there yet. A fellow installer from another state won it from a vendor show and say it is awesome. A few of the negative reviews I read said you need to format the card often (which it overwrites it's self so not sure why), and it doesn't work with Mac (again not sure why, the files are in .AVI, they have software for it). Probably will do a bit more research before I purchase. I jumped the gun too quick on the Thinkware because I had a mark on my fender and I didn't know what from.

I have a couple of G1W-C capacitor dash cams. No battery but if the car is not used for a week it loses the on-screen time/date information. The video quality is very good. I also have a nondescript Chinese knock off. The kind that the screen flips down. It worked OK at first but after a while it flaked out and will not turn on in extreme hot or cold. The batteries are also cheap junk so I dumped them and piggy backed a AAA 3 cell rechargeable pack. It is relegated to occasional use only.

I just picked up a cobra cdr830. So far so good it records in hi def, has night vision, g-force sensitivity and GPS. I picked up a 32 gig card for it so I can make some videos of the crazy drivers in my fine city.

I've had extremely good luck with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LLX2A12?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

I had it in my '14, and it's going in my '16 as soon as I take delivery.

Their software is crap, but you only need it for initializing new SD cards. 32GB seems to hold quite a bit, and it just overwrites the older stuff when it fills up. (Although I think you can override that behavior.)

Only tiny gripe: all your preferences (and I mean all of them) are contained on the SD card. So when you initialize a new SD card, if you don't remember to set your options the same way, the default options will take effect as soon as you put that card in.
