I have a 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 with the UConnect Stereo.

I took it to the dealer last month and the mechanic loaded a software update. After that I noticed that the Compass was no longer working.

So I took it back to the dealer and the mechanic said he was going to have to tear out the entire ceiling to figure out why the compass wasn't working. This didn't make sense to me and fortunately another mechanic stopped him from doing this. Then he decided that it must have been a corrupted thumb drive and that the entire stereo unit needs to be replaced. If it was a software problem why can't they (or myself) just reload the software?

I've lost my faith in this mechanic for a couple other reasons, like he rotated my tires and didn't line up the valve stems on the rear tires so I couldn't add air or check the tire pressure on the inside tires. And it took him 4 hours to rotate the tires and change the oil.

Additionally, I have recently lost my Satellite service and all my presets on AM/FM/SXM. This is the second time this has happened and the last time they spontaneously reappeared.

So, can I do a software download myself, so I don't have my dash/stereo needlessly ripped out and does anybody know a really good Dodge Ram mechanic in the Cincinnati/Dayton Ohio area that does warranty work?

What uConnect do you have? There have been issues with the updates.. I have the 5.0 and there was an update April 2014 (no update since then), it bricked many radios so I haven't bothered with it. Seem like from what you have said the update killed your Compass (it has happened to many others). They should order you a new head unit. The 8.4 gets more frequent updates.

I'm not sure which I UConnect have. How do I tell? Would it say on the window sticker or somewhere on the touch screens of the stereo?

They did order a new stereo and I have an appointment next week for it to be put in but I'm worried that after they replace it, the whole dash will be a rattle trap from having been worked on. Or is it a simpler process to take that component out and replace it?

The Uconnect is the size of the screen.... 3.0, 5.0, or 8.4.

Check Yelp for mechanics or if you see another RAM owner ask them where they are taking their truck. There should be several dealers in your area as well.

Is it a little tiny dealership with only one guy? Ask for that guy to not work on your truck. I have worked in a shop for 6 years. Just like anything, there are guys that are much better at their job than others. When I have to take my wife's Audi in for warranty work, there is only one guy I have work on it.

The 3.0 isn't touch screen and I don't think it even gets sat radio so I would say he's got the 5.0 or the 8.4. The 8.4 is what's in the picture and honestly getting the dash apart to replace the stereo is minimal.

:edit forgot to add pic
