Posting about the well known crank position sensor & tone wheel failure (error code P-336). I was driving my 2017 1500 eco diesel, and attempting to pass another vehicle when suddenly I lost power and could not accelerate beyond about 50MPH. Nearly caused an accident. I eventually got home, shut off the engine and tried to re-start the truck. It took a while to turn over but it did eventually. During all of this, a check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer who is now telling me the sensor must be replaced. This is a MAJOR repair totaling close to $3,000.

After doing my research, I understand there is a known defect on this part. There is more than one recall to put a “band-aid” on the issue and fix it via a software update (which was done on my truck before this happened) purely for safety reasons but nothing to actually fix the defective part that causes the safety issue in the first place. I am looking for anyone who knows anything about the x94 extended warranty that covers this part after the software fix was applied since RAM did not do a full a recall on all trucks impacted by this faulty part. I am absolutely furious that RAM and FCA are trying to sweep this one under the rug and are telling people there is nothing they can do when they know damn well this is a defective part regardless of the actual truck VIN #.

From what I can tell you’re the unlucky buyer if you have ANY eco diesel from 2016-2019 because they all have this part and it can happen to any of them at any time. Anyone have luck with getting a RAM dealer to cover this under warranty (regular or extended) or been reimbursed by FCA?

If this isn’t fixed and paid for by RAM or FCA, RAM will definitely not be my next truck when I go shopping. Chevy here I come. Buyer beware of any RAM eco diesel, as this is the second major thing to go wrong where they’ve had to tear the transmission apart to fix something (which has left me stranded over two weeks and counting. This first time I was towing a trailer).

yes its a fairly well known failure, if you are still under drivetrain warranty it will be covered.

good luck with the other brands! definitely avoid all 1500 diesels they are nothing but trouble!
id say if your ecodiesel has lasted this long fix the tone ring and keep it, or get a new gasser if you so desire

All brands have their issues. It seems like any new truck, regardless of brand, is more susceptible to problems than trucks made more than five years ago. If I was shopping for a new truck right now I’d look for a used 4th gen Ram 1500. I’d possibly consider a 2019 Classic, but avoid anything built during or after the pandemic.

I concur with what hemihustlin suggested. If you like your current truck I’d spend the $3k and fix it. You won’t find a replacement truck for three grand.

If you are not under any kind of warranty, have an independent shop do the repair.
The transmission does not have to come apart or even be removed from the vehicle, just seperated and slid back a couple of inches to reach the crank sensor and tone ring.

$3K is a major rip off, the dealership is trying to rob you. Yes the transmission has to be dropped but it's most likely just the tone wheel not the sensor itself. Find an independent repair shop.

You having a transmission failure on one of the trucks is sorta rare, I'm guessing they replaced the valve body?
