Cause when you back into **** you get to repair the tailgate and the bumper. This is what happens when you work 12 then go to school in the same day. But on the brightside i have all the peices to finish my rear offroad bumper and now i guess i have an excuse to shave the emblem off the tailgate.

I think they came up with a countermeasure for this problem. There's a square pedal in the driving compartment that will clamp down on the rotors, stopping the wheels. This eliminates contact with objects. Of course, this is just a temporary countermeasure until they redesign the rear end of the truck. One option they're looking at is something like the Ford Mustang. Something that looks like someone came and slapped it across the back of the head, slopping the back forward.

This post is not designed to offend any unfortunate Mustang owners or other sloped back end owners.

I love my backup cam for this reason.

Sucks though, hope it gets better soon!

In 16+ yrs of driving I managed to not back into anything in any truck i have owned and never had a back up camera, I do have one on my Outdoorsman now though just because it came that way and I do use it. I'm not talking down to anyone, I'm just not sure I like the dependence on so much tech these days. All the new tech of the vehicle parallel parking for you, backing up to and backing the trailer for you and whatever else is out there and coming bugs the **** out of me. I love buying new but I don't like where it is all heading. I have been thinking about picking up an 06 Mega, Cummins, manual for that reason. That's just me though. Sometimes I want to ditch the smart phone for an ol' flipper but I'm not sure I can go that far. It's a tale as old as time though I guess. It looks like I'm gonna to be the fella that resists it all and I'm fine with that as long as the weather is good enough for me to sit outside and enjoy my beers.

I've backed into something before. In my defense, I was 18 and stupid.

Ya don't have to use it tho........I have a backup camera on my rig, but I don't use it for normal backing.....still use my mirrors.

I only use it the hook up trailers and get as close as possible without hitting when needed.

I don't see anything wrong with using the camera, I use it when backing out of the garage to double check there aren't any kids running across the drive. It just bugs me how dependent people get on all of this stuff, myself included, which is why I would like to go back to more of the basics and live life as I believe it was intended, which doesn't involve computers running it for me. Again, these are only my opinions, what works for some doesn't always work for others. This was just my rant for the day.

I have a back up camera that I didn't really like. It's to easy to watch it and swing the front end into something. But I think it's great for solo trailer hooking up.[emoji1]

Design flaw? I don't think so.

I don't think you needed a back up camera to see that and avoid it, it was so obvious it came out and hit your truck.

With the way today's cars are so low in the front you need a backup camera so you don't run it over. You still need those mirrors though and that screen can't be the only thing.
For some reason I don't think this was an issue in this case...

i use it along with the mirrors. the mirrors still do 90% of the work but it's damn nice to see what's directly behind you and also very handy in tight spaces

trailers are a big bonus too but i find it's useless 50% of the time. depending where the sun/shadows are it can be hard to see plus if you have the small screen it's a bit hard to see no matter the conditions

Ouch. Judging from a previous experience with a tailgate (deep gouges, but about the same surface area as your boo-boo), I'd say that'll cost you about $650 to have a good body shop fix and repaint, if you don't go through insurance.

Forget about back up cams and automated parallel parking, that is dated old technology. For those who think that we rely on too many gadgets to help us operate our vehicles how about this? Tesla now offers a fully autonomous vehicle no driver required. Make anyone nervous? What happens when the software glitches? What happens when sensors fail or give incorrect data to the computer? Scary stuff but hey it the future, would make long road trip much more palatable, just crawl in the back and leave the driving to the computer.
