Heath I wanted to get your thoughts and also what you have heard about this topic and Amsoil's stance. So you know I am on Amsoil side to not pay GM for a license when they already meet or exceed the spec anyway.
Here is a convo that I had with a friend who manages a walmart lube and has to tell people they need to to get Dexos approved oil for warranty on their GM.
I love talking oil so lets get some talk going. GM and their licensing ideas just like like DEx cool was.

Derek Nelson AS soon as I told him it needed the dexos and it was $50 on sale reg $55. He said nope. "well good luck, change it yourself for cheaper I guess"!

Michael Lee Brown Dexos basically means he has to buy good oil right? I mean every oil I would use is on the list anyway. (except Amsoil and Valvoline)

Michael Lee Brown Yeah I bet it does confuse everyone so they will have to pay for expensive licensed product.

Dexos is a spec put out by GM on their late model vehicles. You must use a qualified oil, not necessary licensed, just as with any other spec. There are ILSAC specs and API specs and now GM thinks they need one of their own.
AMSOIL does have oils that meet dexos but they are specific ones. In the signature series line(25k oil), the 0/30, 5/30, and 10/30 all meet this spec. For the XL and OE lines, only the 5/30 meets it. So if using AMSOIL, it must be one of these.

No one can void a warranty as long as the oil meets the specs. Licensing or OEM "approved" oils is just a way to put money in their pocket.

Right so since Amsoil already meets spec on those weights and varieties why should thy pay GM to say they meet them and have a little symbol on the bottle.

The oil company I work for refuses to pay GM their license fee...they even went as far as to send us a cease and desist order. So now, we just call our Dexron formulated products, DEX.
