So I got my i3 the other day and hooked it to my Wi-Fi and updated it. Next day went into my 2017 Ram 1500 5.7 and connected to it, but received an error. Took it inside and had a calibration update and then back to the truck. Now it recognizes it, but the i3 will not perform the backup. Is there a way to force it to backup without changing tunes? I'm still on my stock PCM which is locked. I cannot start swap process, because I don't have a backup to load to the diablosport PCM. I did drop Holley technical support and email yesterday and hope they get back to me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So apparently diablosport told me that 2017 Rams do not need to perform a backup of the stock PCM first.

So I am being told I use the original part number, not the software updated p/n. Would be really nice if there was a user install guide. Can anyone else confirm which part number they used?

The number ending in 303ab would be the original p/n.

Can you not just install the unlocked pcm and then connect with diablo and add your custom tune? Or say 91 octane tune?

I knew which was the original, just wasn't sure which number to use for the swap. You can, there is virtually no documentation and you have to have a stock tune backed up which I assumed meant backing up my stock PCM to my tuner, but that's not the case. I backup the unlocked PCM and then set my tune.

Yes it should back up before programming the diablo tune. Make sure to adjust the gas pedal signal multiplier, make a big difference

I have a 9 drive pedal controller on mine. How much of a difference does that make? I'd take the 9 drive off of the lag was gone. Hate the amount of lag in the stock pedal setup.

the 303AB is the actual part number. The "Module part number" is the one that has the software configuration .
Diablo wants both those numbers on the form. Did on mine, any way.

In reality, they only really care about the 303AB, as it has the correct / compatible hardware inside the module. They jam the updated software into them all.

They only ask for VIN and part number and then part number and serial from the tuner on the current form.

Here's a screenshot from the Holley site. Tech told me to use the original part number for calibration id.

I think this is what the tech was saying too. The tuner will download and load calibration updates as necessary. If it determines the truck calibration is too old it will trigger a download. When I connected my i3 to my truck it said not compatible and then I went in and connected to Wi-Fi and had a calibration update. It's weird that my tuner and alfaobd and torque pro all pull a different calibration id then what's on the stickers. Wonder if it had another update and just never got a sticker. I bought my 2017 in Jan 2022 and am the 2nd owner. I'm assuming the original owner had it in for service under warranty a few times.

So finally got the unlocked PCM installed and loaded the 87 octane tune with performance trans tune and mds turned off. Probably going to wait until after I haul my camper in a week and a half before messing with other tunes. Definitely runs better even at idle and shifts better and pulls a little harder. Only other performance mods are kn cai and flow master flow fx cat back exhaust. Will probably run the 91 tune and then get a hemifever based on my setup. Can't always get 93 octane which is why I'd prefer to stick with 91 base. Overall most of my confusion with this whole thing is lack of decent info available about the actual install which includes diablosports lack of information. They basically offer zero information on the install. I was under the assumption that I had to back up my stock PCM before swapping in the unlocked, but that's not the case. You backup the unlocked PCM. Only thing that gave me a slight heart attack was when I put my battery terminal on my truck started. I have an aftermarket remote start that for whatever reason got triggered by the swap. I was like, man what did I mess up now? The whole PCM plug removal with a small screwdriver since my plug covers came off at the base was actually much easier then I thought as well. I hit it with compressed air and then penetrating oil and pushed locks out and then cut the zip tie and removed and reinstalled the cover and put new zip ties on. I did that after I got the plugs off my stock PCM. That was quite easy as well. I bought 2 new covers from mouser in case mine were actually broken, which they weren't. When the locks stuck the bottom of the plug popped away which kept the lever from deactivating the locks. I also ordered a PCM from eBay for like $70 with same numbers as mine and sent that for my PCM swap so I have my stock just in case. Tuning went smoothly with zero issues. Did have 2 engine codes when the new PCM first connected and truck started up. I think they were both were for the same thing and I cleared them with my i3 and they didn't come back. Funny part about the whole swap process is diablosport still says my unlocked PCM is backordered and has never updated even though they sent it to me and I sent mine back. They also never answered and emails to their tech support although their techs on Facebook and diablosport website were great and pretty active.

Their email notification leaves something to be desired. When I bought the Trinity EX Platinum, I got my replacement / unlocked PCM before the website even updated that I ordered the unlocked PCM.

Did same as you did. Got an ebay PCM for sixty bux and used that for the turn in core so I could keep the good / programmed OEM PCM.
