Let me just throw this out there.............be wary of payload!! The Ram 1500's aren't all that great so just be mindful of what you really intend to do with the truck. Aside from wishing my truck was RATED for a little more payload, I love my Hemi, 8 speed, 3.92 combo! Very fun to drive.

Hmmm. If you are looking at getting a 6.7 and deleting it you will be looking at at least 2 - 3k, probably 3k+ if you get 2013+. My 2011 Cummins got around 14-16 mpg highway before I deleted it and 15-19 after. That was mostly at 75mph and either a strong tail or headwind to make it better or worse. I was able delete mine for $1200 before the prices went up and got that money back when I traded the truck in. Unless your set on wanting a diesel I would stick with a 1500 Hemi. I traded because I barely drove mine and my payment dropped $200/month by trading for a better equipped 1500. My average mpg in this truck over 11,000 miles is 1 mpg lower than the deleted Cummins, yet $.05 cheaper per mile. Also when I had the Cummins I only took it on highway trips and this truck has seen more city driving to bring the avg down some. The 13+ Cummins are seeing mpgs closer to what deleted 6.7s are getting but you didn't mention how much you were planning on spending/new or used. You will spend allot of money to increase mileage beyond what you are getting now and will only be able to justify it by LOVING the truck and the choice you made.

Other than the sound of the Cummins chugging down the highway and being able to load anything in it without any squat, I am liking my 1500 better. I was disappointed seeing Diesel cheaper than gas all over NM and CO all weekend though. Made me want an Eco Diesel in the same truck.

Stripped down 1500 Tradesman with an Ecodiesel: $31,125 MSRP
Stripped down 2500 Tradesman with a Cummins: $41,085 MSRP

They do NOT cost the same. I understand why people say it if they don't look around much: because dealers are treating the Ecodiesel like a high-end model, and almost all the reasonably-priced 2015s are off the lots already.

But the price is way different, and if you order an Ecodiesel, it'll be $10k less than a comparably equipped 2500 with a Cummins.

If he doesn't need the extra capacity of a 2500, there's no reason to pay the $10k and get one.

THIS

I have a similar commute, 31 miles each way, hardly any stop and go (B roads, 55mph limit) and I'm realistically averaging 26mpg after 3500 miles in my SLT Crew Cab EcoD 4x2. I haul a car or a horse box every couple months but right now it just takes me to work and back with better MPG than my MK1 focus. My out the door was 2k higher than the equivalent Hemi, if diesel stays at it's current price gap gap (8 cents more than regular) I'll have that back in less than a year or two.

It's nice going about 700 miles between fill ups in this thing.

Eco D is only ~240~ HP,,, Lotsa TQ, but not a racer by any means,,,

Get the 5.7/3.92/8 speed

Mines definitely no racer but I never feel like I'm lacking power. That's why I prefer diesel power, it has the grunt. I average at minimum 26 mpg on a tank with plenty of stop and go, but normally 27 or better. I've seen 30+ on many long highway trips. In 14 months I've put 53k flawless miles on mine. The posts about Hemi's getting 20-23... Yea, going 55-65 on a flat highway but my friend's 2014 with 8 speed and 3.21 averages 16-17 mixed. My previous pentastar was a good truck and would average 21-23 but nowhere near the truck of my diesel. Also, for the record my father's 2013 CC 3500, 8' bed, 4x4 CTD averages 18 mpg and does 20-22 empty on the highway when driven reasonably. Pretty impressive.

I mentioned used only because I can't stand the loss of value as soon as you drive a new car off the lot.
