Hi Guys,

I'm by no means a car guys, so please excuse the stupid questions.

I recently test drove a 2014 1500 with an ecoDiesel engine and then a 2500 which had the turboDiesel.

My impression was that the ecoDiesel had a lot more "oomph" (meaning I felt like it had a lot more jump to it when I put my foot down) .. than the turbo diesel. I'm wondering if my impression is just because the 2500 is much bigger frame or if there's something else going on here?

Thanks
Warrick

I would say at that feeling came from gear ratios and transmissions
The 3.0 Eco diesel has an 8 speed transmission and most likely had 3.92 gears. That combination with a peak toque of 420 ft-lbs at 2000 rpm will get you going with ease

The 6.7 Cummins is tuned differently from a light duty application. The torque curve is more flat so it has relative power through out. The 6 speed transmission uses torque management through the first 2 or 3 gears to protect itself so you don't really see the full potential down low either. The truck you drive more then likely had 3.42 gears. 2500 diesels have about 2000lbs extra weight compared to the Eco diesel as well.

Thanks, that's very helpful. If I wanted to get the 6.7 Cummins and tune it more for performance, what's the best way to do that? I'm guessing there are 3rd party companies that'll do that for me, but I wouldn't know where to start.

Look at EFI Live, H&S Performance or some others...The best place to start would be with one of our vendors...They can put you in the right direction.

My 2012 6.7 has been tuned and deleted for 2 years now. ..Really wakes the truck up...

Well I've driven and raced both the 6.7 cummins and the ecodiesel. I can spank the ecodiesel all day, but my uncles 6.7...it takes me. He has a DPF delete and H&S tuner which makes a big difference. I'm also custom tuned, CAI, and at the time wasn't lifted. He takes me off the line, then I catch up. It's neck and neck until about 80mph and the cummins starts to walk away.

The German 8 speed ZF trans in the Eco diesel is awesome and keeps that engine in its sweet spot. Great overall powertrain. The cummins is tuned for raw torque, not necessarily power (how fast it works, over time). Cummins has way more torque, which wil be noticed if you decide to pull heavy weight.

Do you fully understand what you are wanting to do to that 6.7? As soon as you touch it with aftermarket parts... bye bye warranty.. If you get caught with out any of the smog equipment, " Massive fines" just so you know.. What are you planning on doing with the truck? You quoted a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton diesel.. is it the diesel you are really looking for? What are you trying to achieve? Daily driver? Tow 24/7? If you are gonna tow a lot... how much weight? Answer some of these and we can probably collectively help you narrow your decisions.

^^^^^no offense Rat....but that was kinda a downer of a post...

FYI maybe I've been lucky but I've experienced none of that and been deleted and tuned for 2 years...Trucks been to dealer a few times with no issues and also regularly tows a 9K pound trailer without issues or problems in at least 2 countries for 28k miles now....

^^^ I think those concerns are honest, and something to consider. They certainly don't impact everyone, some dealers are cooler than others, some states require emissions testing for registration, etc. If you live in a place where those things don't impact you then by all means, Man n black gets to live the life, as do I in Montana, but not everyone gets that benefit. Also Ratket has a point in asking what your intentions are for the truck because the CTD in a 2500+ is a lot of truck (cost, size, efficiency, etc.) to just be used as a daily driver.

Have to agree, though it rarely happens there is a lot of liability to tuning these trucks

There really isn't much out there for brand new trucks
Edge and Bullydog have non delete tuners and Hardway Performance does have a way to provide off road tuning for 13 and 14

wasn't trying to be a downer, just throwing some points out there... I wish I could afford a fully deleted/ tuned/ smoking 6.7.. but the reality is I can't. I am sure in the next two years the 1/2 ton diesel will have some good parts.

Ratklet is making valid points. I work for an OEM manufacturer in a different industry (not related to cars/trucks). Manufacturers are closely watching dealers, and for modifications that are directly linked to problems. Customers get flagged in the system if heavy mods are suspected. They want to Ortega the good customers that are loyal and don't mess with computer systems and try to pass on serious repair bills to other customers. Everyone has different tolerance for risk. My time is far too valuable to be worrying, or fighting dealers or manufacturers on what I think is fair. I keep stock for engine until extended warranty is up. It's not worth the fight. Agree it sounds harsh. I guess it's relatable to insurance. People who take more risk may have fun, but are also gambling. Some manufacturers are getting quite advanced at detecting and tracking mods; some Euro companies. Not sure where Ram is at though, but I'm not planning to test.
