I did a change and put in a limited slip. I got a good contact patch on the drive side, but I struggled to get anything to show on coast side. I decided to button everything up and see what I get. Drive side is completely quiet. Coast side whines over 20 mph.

Installed is: new diff, new ring gear, new bearings and caps. new axle bearings, new axle seals. Didn't touch the pinion.

A lot of guys get whine on new gears, temporary in most cases, check temps did you get a diff temp gauge?

@U&A had a temporary whine?

You get high temps like 230f plus even higher, then you need to take apart stuff..

Did you stay with 3.55's?

I don't know about the coast side issue part, doesn't sound good.

do you have 140w oil in there?

That's a horrible pattern. Your pininon is to close. You can't just add a Limited slip without pulling the pinion.

Always run a pattern before dissembly , that way you know what you're working with. Factory patterns are dog **** most of the time.

I Always use Yukon gears and never had any whining.

Went to 4.88s front and rear. Nitro Gears.

Had gear noise on coast. Not much difference than OEM tho. but it went away SOME after break in.

Personally i think the higher your gear ratio the more noise the inherently make.

Hear the gear sets wining on a semi or tow truck when they are hauling ass down the highway. Definitely making some gear noise. So i dont think its always a bad thing so long as things are meshing right.

When I had a whine while coasting, it was pinion related

New ring gear and old pinion usually don't mix worth a crap,as the pinion already has a wear pattern that matches the old ring gear.

I totally agree here. Installing a new ring gear on an old pinion gear with an established wear pattern is a recipe for a gear whine. You're lucky it's only on the coast side.

I also think you should re-do your wear pattern and check your backlash with a proper dial indicator.

Perfect time to drop the 3.55's and get something funner and tougher. The worst thing about my truck was my 3.55's and I didn't realize it til I drove my friends RAM with 3.92's. Small jump huge performance boost, wanna get the same mpg just take 5mph off freeway Cruse speed.

Plus the 545 has so much bogging with those gears, I bet you have better longevity as well. Better for trans and engine. I'd be looking at 4:56.

Or keep the 3.55's and swap an 8 speed into it :Big Laugh:
It's getting to be a very common swap on the earlier trucks now.
The ZF 8 speed swap is like the old smallblock Chevy or LS swap now-a-days:Big Laugh:
Guys are putting the transmission behind everything, especially over across the big pond;)
Even though you hate it Mike, the transmission has one hell'va good rep. With a good tranny tune, guys are throwing a 1,000 hp at stock 8HP70's and they're living:waytogo:

Good luck finding a new OEM 8HP70......all on backorder.
Low mileage is hard to find in my area also......maybe best scenario is to by a salvage & send to MMX for rebulid or by theirs & send salvage for core.

Keep your eye on your local MarketPlace etc. They show up fairly often on my local Marketplace,as there's usually quite a few trucks being parted out.

There is a reason they make it difficult to get a new transmission. They COULD produce plenty so nothing is on backorder.

They like selling new cars to you every 2-5 years

Finished the full change out, pinion included, a couple days ago. The old pinion fell right out after I pulled the pinion nut. Even the crush sleeve came off by hand. After adjusting shims and all that was needed for new pinion, she's working fine. A very slight whine at around 1500 to 1600 rpm/56 to 61 mph. It's getting slightly less as I drive. I've only put about 100 miles on the new setup though.
