I don't own a RAM (yet) but I'm curious why there are such deep discounts on these trucks? I'm not talking about just the year end models. Everyone seems to be getting 15-20% off MSRP, even on the 2016's.

I haven't heard of discounts this large on any of the other major brands. I'm not complaining, I'm just curious why a dealership would immediately drop the price of a $55,000 truck by $10k. I've shopped both GMC and Chevy and the deals are very limited.

It's all part of the marketing strategy. They know what they need to get out of these trucks.

People tend to associate value with cost and respond well to "discounts". It also gives them leverage with their financing offers which often cannot be had with certain discounts applied. They'll get their money coming or going...

Trucks are consistent good sellers, specially right now while the price of gas is low. There is a lot of margin in them with GM/Ford rolling in the profits. FCA/Ram trying to build a customer base by offering good discounts.

This is all my speculation. YMMV

IMO, it comes down to resale value against Chevy, Ford, Toyota, and the Rams take a big depreciation hit coming off the lot.

Not a big deal to me since I typically keep my vehicles 8-12 yrs and i am not necessarily brand loyal. So it worked out for me getting my 2013 SLT 4x4 v6/8spd CC at $29,400 vs $39,000 back in March 2014. (I spent 10mos shipping for the best deal. Came down to a Toyota Tacoma or a RAM)

Some of the recent 'minor' (IMO) recalls on the 2013+ trucks and radio software hack demos have helped keep the deals coming. *2012 & earlier trucks have had some more severe recalls/limited buybacks that have hurt the brand also.

I have 16k miles in my truck now and still think it's much better styled inside and out than the other brands of truck and hand down a better value with incentives. I also like the public access to vehicle schematics via the techauthority site. It's helped many of us do upgrades/mods on our trucks that would be harder otherwise.

Dealership service/Techs can be a bit flaky with warranty issues, but that goes with most other brands I've owned also, just depends on the dealership.

Overall I couldn't be happier with my truck.

HEMI.
If you can lease, wait until the end of year trucks are being blown out. I got a great deal on mine when I leased it (I've since bought it out) and a friend of mine got an even better deal. $117 a month for 27 months, $3K at signing.

20% off is a very good average. Some do better and some do worse. Your area and dealership experiences will vary.

some people think the depreciation is so huge as soon as they drive off the lot, but in reality, it also comes down to how well they did when negotiating the price paid for the vehicle. Its sad, but even today, with all the tools and resources on the internet, people still get ripped off on vehicle purchases. If you can score a good deal or a great deal, your "instant depreciation" is less bc you narrowed the gap by getting more off the sticker.

Marketing. RAM has been rebuilding the brand for some time. They are getting more and more popular. They are snagging more and more customers from other brands. They are doing a good job at it too!

Yes. I just checked the Kelly Bluebook web site. My truck has an alleged private resale value of $32.184. I paid $31,000 (after discounts and rebates - but before sales tax, etc.) for the truck new off the dealer lot. Sales tax, title, licensing and dealer paperwork fees brought the Out The Door price to $34,***. Safe to say there is not much depreciation just yet.

Edit: Looks like if my truck were sitting on a dealer's used lot, they would price it at $40,100. This is only $4000 under the original MSRP. Source was the NADA web site. So going back to what NOUPF was saying. Someone walking on the lot and asking about the truck, this is likely the price a salesman would give. However the dealer would probably advertise (on Auto Trader, etc.) the truck price much lower.

i can tell you for a fact that people in my area are getting 20% off of ford and gm trucks....i read the other forums regularly and have researched the preferred dealers and they arent shy about it. Similar to Dennis Dillon in Idaho for our Rams.

My good friends wife is a saleswoman at a dodge/ram dealership, hence why I now drive Rams, and it's nothing for them to drop 15%right off the top. Even on base models.

Kind of makes you wonder about that window sticker. But I know for a fact that the sticker is installed at the factory before leaving the plant. It is MSRP.
