Remember on the last Gen, the trucks with 4auto didn't actually have 4wd until there was wheel slippage? Is that still the case on the current Gen?

4auto only locks when there is wheel slippage. That's why it's called Auto

Nono.

On the previous Gen, trucks that had 4auto, even in 4hi a d 4lo, never truly locked into 4wd. The cheaper, lower end trucks that didn't have 4auto had a different transfer case that truly did lock into 4wd.

My 2011 ram had 4auto 4hi 4lo and it's works exactly the way as my 21 new body style ram

This is a post that explains what I'm asking about the new Gen.

It seems that there are two new transfer cases for the 5th gen: 48-12 and 48-11.

How about the less expensive, better value trucks instead of lower end? I have a 2018 2500 Tradesman that is worth a tuck under what I paid for it brand new in 2019 and don't have $800 payments (actually no payment). Plus it has every option I wanted and tows much more than the "higher end" trucks.

I don't know if it's the same thing, but when we bought my wife's Jeep in 2013 it had the option of two different transmission/transfer case combos. Of course, I ordered the less expensive of the two. It turns out that the one we got is basically 4-hi only. It's electronically engaged when you pull up on the handle inside the armrest, but when you pull up again it disengages back to 2-hi and when it is in 4-hi you can't really tell that much of a difference in the driving. Stupid me.

I have a tradesman as well for the price cant beat it these days. Not paying $70,000 + on a ram

A tradesman is a ram and everyone’s pockets are different. To spent 42k on a 2wd tradesman is a waste in my opinion. To spend 45k on a 4wd tradesman and walk away with a barebones truck didn’t sit well with me eiter. I waited until truck month and got a leftover 22 bighorn sport fully loaded for 20 percent off the 64k. In the end it was pretty close in price and I love what I got Instead of being dissatisfied with my purchase. If you shop smart there is no need to buy the lowest value truck.

I wanted a crew cab standard box truck without E torque. There was no standard box crew cab trucks anywhere on lots by me unless you went into the 2500 / 3500 territory. I originally was going to get a 5th gen bighorn but only 2023 orders were open and e torque and auto start stop was mandatory. Went with the tradesman classic and ended up saving a lot of money and still got a truck with a regular v8 and no auto start stop and a ‘key’ I like my leather seats and full center console but am happy with what I got.

If I could have added 4x4 to mine and got it for $45k, I'd have done that in a heartbeat.

I'm not understanding your comment. A Tradesman is a RAM.

That’s all that matters man is that you are happy. Just to be clear with my prior post, it was in no way a dig at anyone. Dude honestly all I cared about was getting a hemi, crew cab, heated seats for wife and kids, and the upgraded radio. You can keep the rest of the **** I have in the 1500 sport. Is it cool to use but I really can do
without it.

No offense taken on my end, I did get the heated seats on the cloth bench seat set up with the cold climate package I think it was but they are the weakest s h y t t i e s t seats I ever experienced.

I am not happy with how much I spent on a tradesman, but at the same time it is a 4x4 and crew cab which made the price jump high, and I added pretty much every option I could get with it. I have a $50,000 tradesman LOL. Still a better looking, more powerful and optioned truck vs the other 2 big names though for what you get. So I am happy in the end. Just lost a lot of money as soon as I pulled off the lot. This was a build and wait truck for me. Nothing on the lots came close.

I had a little sticker shock too, and I purposely ordered mine with almost no options because I need the towing and cargo capacity. I had a Silverado, which I was very happy with, and I was going to go with their 2500 but neither Chevy or Ford would let me order a truck. I had to take what was available on the lot, and everything was way more truck - bells and whistles-wise - than I needed or wanted to pay for. RAM was the only one that would let me order what I wanted, so that's the reason I went with them. Not that I don't think RAM is fine, it just wasn't my #1 choice. The only options I got were tow hooks, the spray-in bedliner, anti-spin rear end, and 5th-wheel prep package and I still had to pay more than $45k.
