I have a 2020 Ram 3500 diesel. It has less than 24,000 miles on it. Yesterday, my truck went into regen mode which has been quite often so I was getting ready to drive it on to the freeway to allow to do the regen. However, the check engine light came on with an error message saying the exhaust filter was full and there was a power reduction and go see dealer. This was the first time this happened. I was able to get to the dealership. The service writer ran the code to confirm the problem. He informed that he has had these changed in a lot of late model Rams. Luckily for me, my bumper to bumper warranty was still in effect so no out of pocket expense. He also informed that was some sort of internal design flaw with the DPF that their has been no fix yet. The replacement part will be the exact same DPF as the one that needs to be replaced. I was told after this replacement there would be 2year parts and labor on the new installed DPF. He let me know he has not come across too many that he had to replace a second time. Has anybody with this a late model Ram 3500 run into this problem?

I've seen a few, it happens. Do you do mostly city driving? Idle a lot or rarely tow heavy?

My 2020 2500 went into a regen that told me to stay on the freeway. 10 minutes later it lit the engine light, put the truck into limp mode, and said to take it to the regens. The DPF gauge said 100% full. The dealer changed out all the fuel and air filters and ran two manual regens.
Now the DPF gauge cycles between 25% and 5%, averaging 20%, but dropping to 0% sometimes, especially after a regen.
I never paid much attention to the DPF gauge: it always used to be at zero.
Is the filter shot? Is it wounded? Dead?
It's under warranty. Will the dealer replace it?

Any codes? How many miles and hours on the truck? Do you use a fuel with 20% or more Bio? Do you do a lot of short in town driving and or let it set at idle for long periods of time? Where do you get your DEF from? FYI DEF has a short shelf life in hot climates? Dealer will not replace DPF unless its 100% shot being its a very costly item....

The truck has about 38,000 miles on it. About half of that is towing. Mostly towing a 4,500 pound travel trailer, but sometimes up to 6000 pounds.
I took it to the dealer in limp mode a few weeks back when the DPF filter went into a regen while on the freeway for 15 minutes, then failed. Up till then I never paid much attention to the DPF gauge: it was always at zero.
The dealer ran 2 manual regen cycles and drove it 40 miles. Now the DPF gauge cycles from 5% to 50%, but it did get back to 0 once for a few minutes. Seems to be mostly around 25%.
The dealer did say that the fuel filters were pretty full, although I always buy diesel from quality stations. DEF is from Home Depot or auto parts houses. The truck is almost never driven on short trips; the car gets better fuel efficiency and is easier for my wife to park.
I let the truck sit in the garage for a few weeks after the dealer played with it, because spine surgery laid me low for a bit.
I dropped it back to the dealer when it was going into regen mode every 50 miles or so. They say it is not throwing any codes and there is nothing wrong with it.
My wife doesn't want to take it any distance because she doesn't want it to strand us somewhere. I suspect the worst it would do would be to go back to derating the engine until getting back to the dealer, but I am not sure how long it will stay in that mode until it shuts down completely.
We live in Flagstaff at 7000 feet, so our cold climate should be pretty friendly to DEF.
The DPF filter is still under warranty.
How common is it for this filter to indicate 50% full? Is it worn out?
Thanks for the help.

keep the RPM’s up which will increase the heat keeping the system clean.

Service department said to run it hard all the time when we got ours.

Do you check the date on the Def your buying? Do you always use the same brand of Def? Old Def can cause problems with passive DPF soot cleaning... As for DPF reading on Evic any time I have ever checked it it is always at Zero, I was told if I want to see move off of zero I would have to leave it on the dash screen for a few days...

I have been running it around town for errands etc. Around 35 miles per day. And the DPF gauge went from 25% the first day down to 0% after a passive regen. It has been hanging at 0% since then. I suppose that if it continues to behave I will try it towing a distance.
