So I have been getting a humming noise at around 50 to 60 mph. I also heard a popping noise the other day while backing up into my parking spot. All I think are coming from the Driver Side.
I get under the truck today to take a look. I grab the cv axle and wiggle it. It seems to have some play in it where the intermediate shaft goes into the differential.
I'm assuming I need to replace the intermediate shaft. Does anyone know the procedures and what parts I'll need to complete the job?
I need to do this myself to save some money. Hopefully someone on here has done this before and can share the experience.

Cv Shafts
(Car Quest Brand from Advanced Auto)
PN : NCV- 545841
$89.99/ea

Intermediate Shaft
NCV 94-9249
(NAPA Auto parts Brand)
$154.99

Before anything track down that intermediate shaft as they don't seem too commonly stocked. CV shafts on the other hand were in stock everywhere I checked.

Instead of writing you a book just YouTube strut install for our trucks and you'll find like 400 videos with tool lists. Basically from a 10mm-22mm, pry bar and a big adjustable cresent. Slide hammer would make life easier but not necessary

35mm is cv nut size at the hub side.

Once you get the strut out of the way pull the absolute dog **** out of the cv, if you have a slide hammer this will be much easier. There's a chance the cv will pull past the retainer clip, but most likely the intermediate shaft will pull out still stuck inside the shaft. Grease the new splines and it pops right in. Same as the cv. A little grease on the new splines and it pops on.

While you have it apart check the passenger side and grease the splines. It isn't serviceable without disassembly and my splines are seriously degraded and the cv is very sloppy. You may be able to save yours since it seems water intrusion is the biggest culprit. I need either a new front dif or will try to rebuild mine. 20200513_191047.jpg20200516_114809.jpg20200516_132433.jpg

Thanks for the info. So is there a bearing where the intermediate shaft goes into the diff? What will take up the slop I have now? Just replace it and it will get rid of the slop? Sorry for the dumb questions but I've never tackled this before.

Yea there's internal roller bearings. I was wondering the same but when I pressed the new one in it was super tight. Idk if the retainer clip and shaft are made of softer material in order to save wear on other components or what bit all my drivers side slop is 100% gone.

Passenger side....well that's another issue lol

This just happened at the wrong time. I just put in about $1500 in doing a mds delete, lifter and cam. New tires were just put on last week. WTF.

Mine has a little slop no noise no issues going to assume its normal i would look elsewhere for the noise i will bet you its not the shaft its self. If the cv axle its self is good i would check your front driveshaft.

Is there a way I am supposed to check?
