I’ve got the entire front suspension pulled apart because I’m going to replace everything. 160,000 miles

I got the driver side CV axle out quite easy. I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube. It came out with that short intermediate shaft. I wrapped a towel around that and put it in the bench vise and it came right out.

I’ve been struggling for two hours on the right side (passenger side). I watched a video of a guy up in Canada hitting it with a large hammer. Also with punches. It only came loose when he hit it with his air tool air hammer.

I’ve had an Ingersoll rand air gun, and a kit in my toolbox for a few years. I broke it out today and hooked it up to my compressor. I can’t get this cv axle loose. It might’ve moved 1/32 of an inch.

I even hit it briefly with some map gas. I sprayed it with PB blaster, hoping something would get in there. I’m running out of options here.

Unless I keep spraying it and let it sit overnight? And try again tomorrow?

What have you fellas used in situations like this?

I found this video late today. After quitting:

This may be my only option to get this thing out. And that’s removing the housing on the inside. I put brand new front differential fluid in this thing that I haven’t driven it. So I have to drain it into a clean container. And reuse it later.

Have any of you guys tried this method in the video?

Heat it with a cutting torch, then beat it loose. Map gas isn't gonna get it hot enough

I don’t own a cutting torch. And not quite sure how much equipment that involves? Especially if I’m only going to use it once.

I may try with that guy did in that video. Apparently there’s a retaining clip somewhere in there. And that may get beat up by trying to bang it out.

I’ve got a bunch of stuff in my rock auto cart right now.

Let me ask you another question. Who is making really good CV axles for Ram pick ups. Mine is a 2015 four-wheel-drive big horn. And with the Eibach pro lift kit the truck will be @ 2 1/2” higher in the front. I don’t know if that’s a consideration with the CV axles?

I’d like to get the parts ordered tonight

I’m assuming both the left and right axles are the same length? I got the driver signed out, but I’m still working on removing the passenger side cv axle

When finished the front suspension will be @ 2 1/2” higher. Which cv axle should I buy? I already have other things in my rock auto cart.

Thanks!

Sometimes it helps to rotate the axle so that the clip falls into a different place. Push it back in and rotate it 180 degrees. I'm assuming we are looking at the axle at the transmission.

I have had to cut the axle with a grinder and split it apart to get it off only had to do this twice.. You will need a new clip and BE CAREFUL not to damage the splines or youl be replacing the shaft to.

I was contemplating that. But didn’t feel comfortable trying it. I have a 4” makita grinder. Too big and wound probably hit the housing on the intermediate shaft (passenger side). Unless there some type of “mini grinder” to cut metal.

Going to try this method. Going to soak in pb blaster overnight. Will replace the circlip and o ring.

The entire front end has been removed and will be replaced. With the exception of the lower control arms. Right now the passenger cv axle is resting on the LCA.

When I get this front suspension finished, it will be @ 2 1/2” higher than factory.

I have to order new CV axles. Do I have to take that into to consideration (the new height) when ordering?

I’m ordering other things from rock auto. Any recommendations on a good quality CV axle? I was also looking at the “American Truck” website. Their CV axles are over $300 each. Not sure how their products rate?

I’m looking for recommendations on a new set of CV axles. Thanks!

The dealer replaced the front differential in my 21 about 6 months ago because of a bad bearing and they arent serviceable. They told me that 90% of the time they replace the differential its because they cant get the axle shaft off of it to replace the axle shaft itself. They said it's a fairly common problem because my front differential was on backorder. Good luck

I found a YouTube video yesterday. I removed the CV axle from the back metal housing.

I don’t know what the correct name for it is, but I removed that intermediate shaft housing on the passenger side. Six bolts. I had to wiggle it out and tap it with a hammer a few times.

I’ve got it on the workbench soaking with PB blaster. I’m gonna let it soak overnight. Then tap out that back housing of the CV axle.

I have to order a new CV axles along with a few other things.

As I mentioned before with the Eibach Pro lift springs the front of the truck will be about 2 1/2” higher. Can you guys recommend some really good CV axles? I’d like to get it ordered today.

Thanks!

Imagine some poor dude being told this out of warrenty and believing it and getting hosed for a new front diff. Nothing funny about that.
Can you recommend some good quality front CV axles for my ‘15 Big Horn?

I don’t know if the 2 1/2 inch lift (when finished) is a consideration when selecting new CV axles?

Thanks!
