Seems like now that my truck has some miles on it (~28,000) my towing fuel economy is getting better and more consistent. On a weekend trip from Medford, OR to Sisters, OR (about 190 miles each way) I got 14.3 going and 14.8 coming home. Both mileages calculated as the dash MPG is a bit optimistic. I get around 28 or 29 highway when not towing and anywhere from 19 to 22 around town. Very pleased over all.

some members with the Hemi get 14-15 mpg while just driving, and it drops into the single digits while towing.
The EcoDiesel gets the best fuel economy out of the three engines offered in the Ram. With the 33 gallon tank the truck can travel almost 1000 miles.

I have no way to compare. My Eco-diesel is the only Ram or Dodge truck I've owned in over 50 years. I just know that I am very pleased with my overall fuel economy both towing and not. I did opt for the Chrysler extended warranty mainly because my truck is loaded with technology plus the air suspension.

I ordered my 2016 Ram Eco-diesel in late 2015
Drove it home on January 16th 2016

In July 2016, i read a notice that everyone was losing engines & that everyone should change over to the heavier oil.
I drove straight to a Jeep Dealership & went into the parts department & bought the oil & a filter.
The service dept. already had my Ram on the hoist.

That Ram got as much as 27 MPG according to the EVIC on that first trip.

Then the FEDs took away 5 & later 2 was given back, so now on a straight flat highway, i get 24 MPG

I was so happy, i planned on buying a new eco-diesel next year

they are not going to build them any more

The first thing you want to do is compare the cost to travel one mile before comparing the costs between diesel and gasoline-powered travel. The next variable is the delta between diesel and gasoline prices which can drastically vary between markets across the country and what gives the impression diesel is more expensive.

In my local area, this morning, regular gas is going for $4.39 and diesel is selling for $5.25 per gallon (same station) yielding a delta of $.86 per gallon.

In my 2013 Hemi 1500, my average MPG was 17MPG and in my 2022 ED I'm seeing 26.5MPG, the same driving style, and the same daily travel destinations.

The cost to drive one mile in the Hemi is $.26 and in the ED $.20. While the higher pump price of diesel and the delta between them provides the false impression diesel is more expensive, it isn't. Some may argue the additional cost of DEF but that number is so small it isn't worth factoring in. Others will use inflammatory nouns suggesting the incredible higher massive costs of maintaining a diesel while ignoring the longer oil change intervals and then comparing the highest cost of a diesel oil change to the lowest cost of a gas engine oil change.

Plus, a lot of members insist on running premium 91 octane in their Hemis. ( Not me)
Where I live 91 costs MORE than diesel...
So, better mileage is just gravy...

The eco is a fine choice for some and not for others. Take the above example of $0.06 per mile better, in that scenario it takes 37000 miles to just make up the cost difference between the engines. And my oil changes are around 7500 miles. I run 89 fuel, around me that is 3.59 a gallon and diesel is 4.79 a gallon. Net 1.20 a gallon. eco runs 8.5qts, hemi runs 7qts so no big difference. My oil costs about 6.50 a qt.

Better towing mileage is nice in the eco but my hemi usually goes over 300 miles on a tank and by then I am more than ready to stop and stretch.

Using a Sierra 4x4 club cab with the 5.3 gas V8 pulling our 3500# popup camper we were lucky to get 13 mpg, couldn't hold 65 on any incline without downshifting and yelling about it, and that gasser really liked to let everyone know that it was doing "work." Without the trailer it was quick and had that nice V8 rumble and driven gently could eek out 20 mpg. Same trailer, crew cab 4x4 3.5 V6 EcoBoost, same roads, same speed, 17 mpg. The 10 speed and engine quietly doing what they're supposed to do, 20-21 mpg without the trailer and without much effort on my part, felt even quicker off the line when I wanted to play. Same trailer, crew cab 4x4 EcoDiesel, 70 mph on the same route, 17 mpg, 8 speed is smooth and engine is drama free, easy to forget the trailer is even back there. 25mpg without trailer, we'll call it a bit "leisurely" getting off the line but once it gets rolling there's no issue with anything it needs to do.
There's Different strokes for different folks. Many of us buy used, so the price difference between the engines gets diluted a bit. What something "costs" and what it's "worth" isn't necessarily just about money, and can be very subjective.

I bought an EcoDiesel because I love love love the range and the fuel economy. I also just like driving a diesel. It's my second; I had an F250 6.0L that was a great truck (despite all the negative press about it).

I'm getting ready for a road trip next week....should be interesting to see what mileage I get from SoCal to Scottsdale with this load!

I did a trip in August from Oregon to Tenn. and back. Logged 6700 miles (not towing and averaged a tic over 28 mpg. Very pleased.

The refineries are opening back up after some repairs & a complete cleaning of the tanks
All of the refinery tanks, all the pipes that go almost Coast to Coast & the local Tank Farms have to have Winter Grade Gas in them by November 1st, Winter gas is cheaper & some of you will feel a Power loss

Almost all engines will get better MPG over the first 20K miles as they break in, and have less friction from manufacturing.

Engine was bad, every time I pulled 6200 lbs , service engine light
In 4 yrs only 48,000 miles

They killed that engine in 2019 and released the 2020 ecodiesel which unlike the 3rd generation ecodiesl (like the one in my 2015) has been rock solid and leaps and bounds more reliable without the main bearing failures the Gen 3 eco is prone to suffer from.

Not sure where your coming up with the generation numbers but there has only been two different generations in Ram trucks. The DS body truck were the Gen2 EcoDiesel, the DT body trucks have the Gen3 EcoDiesel. The first generation of the engine was never in a production vehicle, it was R&D only when GM owned part of VM Motori

With payload pretty much maxed out, I got close to 26 mpg between SoCal and Scottsdale. Super happy with that.

More than one 2023 Ram video, shows an Eco-Diesel under the hood

Last month, the head of Ram stated that they were dropping the eco-diesel for 2023.
What the heck is going on ?
