I'm curious about where this device is any more useful that a multimeter or a lamp tester?

I would tests fuses with a multimeter.

Most multimeters have an ohm meter/continuity tester with tone.

And a lamp style tester likely cost about $5 or $10. I'm guessing that you likely already own these devices, or multiples of them.

What am I missing? Is it the cool green & red LEDs?

Those power probes work great. There are a couple less expensive alternatives available if the cost is whats keeping you from buying one. I believe Autel and Innova make versions of the Power Probe that arent as costly
