I got my recall last week and what happens about 3 hours ago?? You guessed it! The Effing pinion nut backed off and locked up the differential. By the grace of GOD I was only going about 20 when it happened. I just came off the highway doing 75! So things could have been a hellova lot worse. Hopefully the dealership has "the parts" to fix it. I can't take much more. I lost my job and my health insurance 3 weeks ago 4 weeks before that my wife hit black ice in the middle of the interstate and wrecked the truck and I just literally got it fixed. Then my Mother in Law died! My wife is a total mess, but fortunately calming down. (They were super close). This is the only vehicle we have right now because the Grand AM took a crap about a year and a half ago and we couldn't afford to get it fixed.

Well here's an update. I'm getting a whole new rear end, carrier with the limited slip, case, whole nine yards. The tech went to clean up the old case and found a crack, so in with the new parts. Here's some pics. Then there was a surprise sitting on the showroom floor. I didn't expect to see one of these locally.

I hope your luck turns around soon, but it is certainly lucky you were going slow when it locked up. I replaced my rear pinion seal a few weeks ago, and my nut was good, but I do not like the procedure to re-tighten the nut. No set value, just try to match the old torque which to me was really hard to measure because of the crap in lb. torque wrench I have. So, it ended up at 120 ft lbs for the pinion nut. Now I worry all of the time it is going to let go...Things WILL get better man.

Thanks Treeshark. You're right, it could have been a lot worse! I shudder to think if I was on the highway when this happened or if my wife was driving! My guardian angel was watching over my wife and I for sure.

Really sorry to hear about your misfortune. I hope things calm down for you and you get everything squared away.

I am a little confused though. The pinion nut recalls I see when I google it have to do with the '09-'12 Ram models. Your profile looks like you have a 3rd Gen. Was there more than one recall on this issue?

Thanks.

There is. My recall notice said "on certain 2005 models". I'm not sure if there's more than one year or not. The tech at the dealership said the recalls for the 4th gen. are the same as the 3rd gen. (pinion nut)They still can't figure out why the 3rd gen was recalled later. Interestingly enough, there's not parts available yet for the recall because they haven't figured out the best way to fix the problem. :insane:
