Hi all:

my 2016 1500 Eco Diesel is back in the shop. almost 2 weeks to the day four years later I'm being told that the EGR cooler needs to be replaced. I have had no issues with coolant, or engine temp. 5 months ago it was in the shop for HPFP recall.

On 12/28 - the acceleration was limited for about 30 seconds and there is a noticeable lack of pick up. Shortly after the Throttle Body sensor error flashed on the screen. Truck accelerated and then the check engine light came on.

I find it confusing that the issue is something that has been ongoing now for about a year, but am being informed that it is not related and my four year old EGR cooler is the culprit and needs to be replaced to the tune of $3500+

any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

The thoughts are that engine is a LEMON. It's junk. There's a reason they were given a stop-sale order, recalled and eventually canceled. The best thing you can do is trade it for however much you can get and buy a normal gas powered truck.

I think its 8 years old, your looking at maintaining the engine or trading. My suggestion, make a choice. Nothing, absolutely nothing last forever.

You have smog checks? delete that isht.

If this is true your life got easier, that stuff is pure garbage...

What are the exemptions for emissions testing in Illinois?

Vehicles exempt from emissions testing include the following:
  • Vehicles that don't require registration.
  • Diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Electric vehicles (but not hybrids)
  • Cars built in 1967 or before.
  • Antique vehicles.
  • Custom vehicles.
  • Street rods.
  • Custom vehicles.

Now you can clean it all up, but the issue is it will keep gumming up, it is impossible tech. So if you clean it up look at tubes, then trade that pos in.

If you delete emissions equipment, even if the state doesn't check, you will be in violation of the federal clean air act.

As of right now the feds aren't going after many individuals for violations. They are targeting companies that sell delete kits. Eventually though I have a feeling they're going to go after individual vehicle owners. You'll get a knock on your door at 2am and it will be armed EPA agents there to seize your truck and slap you with a $10k fine. Deleting isn't worth exposing yourself to that risk.

Been hearing that since the mid 2000s. By the time they get around to it, most who've done it will have sold/traded/worn out the truck.

More than likely it would get pushed down to each state to enforce. The EPA doesn't have the manpower to go to every town in every state and track down vehicles.

The government has infinite time and money, and at $10k per violation it's not a waste. Once they've put the big tuning companies out of business with multi-million dollar fines they'll come after John Q Citizen. Set up some tip lines so Karens can submit your plate number when you zip by them rolling coal and all they have to do is send an agent to your door.

Just a thought, anything you take off you can store and put back on. But if it were me, I'd find a 2001-2002 HO cummins, we had 3 in the family, best diesel ever this side of a 12 valve. Make sure if it is an 01 you don't get CA version that had injectors on the side, it is another fail by CA version of Cummins, I do believe that only was 2001.

Not all deleted trucks roll coal. Quite a lot of them aren't even detectable by noise levels anymore. So..... how would you anticipate big Gov going after those folks in states with no emissions testing? That is a state by state regulation and the Gov can't mandate each state to put it in place.

There are software developers everywhere, so even if they did put the big companies out of business (which they won't... because they don't JUST do delete tunes) there are always the mom and pops.

They can toss a lot of money and time at it (like the Gov loves to do) but it won't go anywhere. If they solve the problem, the EPA would have to shrink in size and considering that they want to get bigger they need a purpose. So... best to hit folks for a while and then back off so they can keep working the "treatment" and not the "cure". It keeps everyone at the EPA employed.
