My 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd QuadCab has a 4.7 V8 engine with multi 4 speed automatic. The 4.7 engine has 200,000 miles and is now very loud lifter/valve clatter and burning oil. The multi 4 speed automatic is fine. A friend is willing to give me at no cost a 1997 - 5.9 gas engine that has 150,000 miles. The donor 5.9 (360 c.i.) is still in its original vehicle, a 1997 dodge ram Van 3500 with automatic transmission that is slipping. My question is, would this be a engine swap that is reasonable? Any advise will be appreciated.

Did you do the swap? I am planning a similar swap but with a 5.9 from a 2000 truck

For the 2002 DR trucks the 4.7 to 5.9 gas swap is relatively straightforward. You can't just swap the engine over and roll. You will need the PCM, engine, transmission w/torque converter, exhaust Y-Pipe, oxygen sensors, engine wiring harness, headlight wiring harness and potentially the instrument panel harness depending on the engine harness that you get.

I have done this swap several times and I have always used a donor truck to get all of my parts.

Since the donor 5.9 was mated to a slipping transmission, I chose not to do the swap. My 4.7 liter's 45RFE transmission seems to have more life left in it. I did add 32oz of Marvel Mistery oil to the crank case and it quitened the lifters considerably. The truck needs a quart of oil about every 3 months, so it isn't costing a lot. I am planning on replacing the lifters and rocker arms this summer myself.
