I test drove a Ram with etorque Hemi 5.7 engine with 18 inch wheels last week. I could feel the hybrid like driving characteristics and I like it. I also test drove one without etorque, but had 20 inch wheels and I liked that one as well. I have also found another Ram dealer who has a Ram 1500 optioned almost the same way as the former one but without the etorque. This one is about $1500 cheaper (no navigation, no etorque). Which engine would you prefer and why?

I think the eTorque would be nice for gas mileage..... but it also one more thing that go wrong. We saw the trouble they had with eco-diesels blowing up left and right - never know what the eTorque could bring.

I haven't driven the e-torque yet, but I did have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the V6 that had the auto stop/start feature - I HATED IT!!! I couldn't stand the engine shutting off at stops, and the delay to start back up. Maybe the e-torque doesn't have the same delay, but it was so annoying that I traded in my 2017 GC for a 2018 GC with the Hemi.

It's enough that it would keep me from buying the e-torque.

I think it would be nice for the added power down low. I haven't driven one, but from what I understand you can disable the auto start/stop. The etorque system looks like it's fairly simple as well. I'm curious to see how it will hold up down the line.

Minimal fuel economy gains on the highway, no notable performance gains and more stuff to go wrong. Personally I'd opt out of e-torque. Might be a different story when stop/start becomes mandatory and it reduces the lag, but for now I say no thanks.

Slightly off topic question for those with stop start. How do you get the truck warmed up in the winter. Is there a way to let it run to get the heater core warmed up for heat and defrost?

The stop start system won't "engage" until a few parameters are met. One of those being the engine at operating temperature.

I chose to get a truck without it.
Maybe if it was around for 2-3 years of reviews/reliability I would of felt better buying one with it.
I will/can easily put 15-20k miles a year on the truck and I didn't want to worry about any issues popping up past 60k miles.
Yea, could get an extended warranty, but I usually find ways to void them.

No etourqe for me. I cannot abide stop/start systems in vehicles.

It was a cheap option when I ordered mine. It's just a simple electric motor. My lawnmower has a larger electric motor and the 56 volt battery for it is only slightly larger than 2 soda cans side by side. I haven't tried to see what the battery looks like yet.

The stop/start is no big deal. Just feel the engine vibration stop and then the exhaust bark when it fires. Pretty seamless.

Pulling away from a stop on ground asphalt with light throttle it disturbs the asphalt and leaves tracks. Pulling away with my F150 King Ranch 3.5l Ecoboost, same easy throttle application wouldn't disturb the asphalt at all. So, even though my butt dyno can't tell, there is some extra bottom end grunt. Which is going to be helpful towing my enclosed car trailer

I'm not sure FCA has a great track record with new engines. Maybe that wont be the issue with this one as its bolted to a reliable power plant.

My Mercedes S550 has the start stop and the first thing I do when I get in each time is disable it by setting it to sport mode. It is also a 48 volt system, so I wonder if Chrysler did not license some of the etorque tech from MB. Ram just raised the price again for the Etorque by another $650 so it is $1550 more than a standard hemi. This makes the payback on it around 86,000 miles based on gas being $3 per gallon and the 2 mpg better mileage you get with the etorque. I chose not to get the Etorque.

Non. I don't trust it yet. The good ol 5.7 Hemi that's been around for 15 years, I trust.

I test drove one today with & without; Probably be ordering one without. Just didn't like it and how the stop/start feels...

I'll leave my details/observations in my thread on the General Discussion if interested...

If you plan to keep the truck a long time, as I do, I would shy away. The more electronics the more to go wrong. The added electronics to the go of the vehicle is nothing I want to gamble with.

Does the stop start have a disable button? I know on the ford's you can shut it down, but you have to do it every time you start the truck. GM is adding the ability to disable it on their new trucks as well under customer pressure. Some of their other vehicles with it did not have the option in the past.

The hemi e-torque is an in-house/FCA unit from Magnetti marelli but the V6 is made out of house,,,maybe borg-warner...one is liquid cooled and one is not. I might be mixing up the details but it's all there somewhere, lol.

I've driven one of those jeeps and that auto start/stop was horrible I don't mind it on the eTorque. Don't get me wrong it's unnerving when the motor just stops but I never feel like I can't reliability zoom out into traffic when I want to. It's ready to go so much faster than the jeep, and it's not even close.

The exact same thing people said about EFI coming from carburetors...look where we are now.
