Met a guy today who drives a semi coast to coast picking up FCA buy backs. He returns them to MI and FCA gets them running, minimum repairs, and sends them to auction. If you come upon late model FCA products make sure its not one of those before buying.

How can you tell if it was a buy back ?

Depends on the pricetag and any warranty that comes with it (for instance if the dealer puts it in any sort of CPO program). They'd at least have to fix it up enough to get past lemon laws (in many states, 'Used' often does not mean 'Exempt'), and the price might be low enough to do the repairs yourself...

But yeah, it's kind of expected that they'd do that... every manufacturer does it (some just have the dealer fix it up and transfer it to another dealer just to make it look good). Only question is, do they fix it up enough that whatever problem caused the buy-back goes away?

You could get some clues off the Carfax ownership history; seeing the previous owner(s), seeing it change hands and under what condition (I suspect that FCA LLC --and not just a dealership-- would have to take ownership somewhere in the chain if they bought it back due to lemon law reasons.)

It also never hurts to just point-blank ask which auction they got it from, then do the extra homework and contact the auctioneer?

I bought a used 2008 Corvette that was a buy back. Carfax listed fuel pump problems. GM factory repair was done, car re- sold at a auction. I was second owner after repair. I never had any issues, not one problem with the car and got it for over 15k less than new.

Different states have different lemon laws. What would normally be considered a warranty issue in one state may qualify for a buy back in another. Do your research and you should be fine. Banks will usually loan around 75% of Blue Book on vehicles with a branded title. Most dealers know this and price accordingly.
