Finally CarPlay coming to Ram

Just read on All-Par the new version of the Limited in the 3rd quarter of this year will come with CarPlay... wonder if all other models will to?

It has nothing to do with the trim. All 2018 models with the 8.4 will have it.

Definitely not a software update. They couldn't release an update with that functionality even if they wanted to.

Do some YouTube searches to see it in action if you are curious. I recently changed my 8.4 HU to a Kenwood HU with Android Auto / Apple Carplay with this feature in mind. Plug the phone in and it uses the phone's navigation, music library, phone, text and more.

Google Maps is second to none and is SOOO much nicer than the navigation system that comes with our Rams, or any other vehicle IMO. It is smart with traffic, always updated and doesn't want you to go back home because you took a wrong turn. LOL

I can also let a passenger plug in and it's their stuff, no BS setup, just plug in and it works. It is definitely the trend for the future. Personally....and I cannot believe I am going to say this as I find that car tech entertainment should not be a reason to buy a car....but I would not buy a car today without Android Auto / Carplay.

Yes, that and all of the settings are present via using an iDatalink Maestro interface.

Adding Android Auto and Apple Car Play to the existing 2013-2017 models is "possible".. Chrysler is just not pushing to have it done. My guess is because they use a resistive (pressure sensing) touchscreen, have a not so great CPU, and are limited on RAM and storage space on the 13-17 models. Again non of that means it wont run.. it "may" just not be very responsive and would lead to a poor user experience..

Resistive touchscreens are not the best for performing pinch/zoom functions etc.. The 2018 models have a capacitive screen so they will be as responsive as your cell phone.

either way id still like to see them push it to the 13-17 models because I would like to have google maps full screen on the head unit..

Oh and the real reason we prob will never see it on our radios is.... Chrysler wants you to buy a new truck.. so there is that..

Android auto is okay, but I only ever use it on my phone for long drives. The google maps is much nicer than the stock navigation, though, but that's still not enough of a reason to spend thousands on an upgrade. If I get desperate, I'll use my phone and the little mount in the truck. Heck, that little phone mount in the centre console even holds my tablet.

I am running the DMX7704s but any Kenwood that is idatalink capable will work.

Single biggest feature this brings in my mind is Waze on the bigger screen.
