I have about 1500 miles on my new power wagon, and I am getting ready to go on a trip to Colorado that will be about an additional 1000 miles. Just checking to see if it is important to get an oil change out-of-the-way before, or after your initial 3000 miles or so. I’ve seen numerous threads saying that people are changing their oil on a new vehicle after about 1000 miles. How important is this, or do I need to get it done before my trip, or just wait until the odometer is at 3000 or 5000?

I followed the owner's manual and the break in directions. First change at 8000. Dealer said 1 year or every 8K, whichever comes first. Every 4K if severe duty. I have a '16 though. Check the oil life remaining on the EVIC too.

I can never resist an oil thread.

Honestly, if it were that significant for the great majority of cases, it would be in the maintenance schedule.

That said, manufacturers only need to get to the end of the warranty period. Vs some owners that want to drive it forever.

I’m in the 1% club or call it what you will; changed mine at 500 and 2500. Now I’ll start doing about 5k or 75% of oil life on the EVIC and send some samples in for used oil analysis. Adjusting from there based on lab results. I have faith the algorithms used by the PCM to predict oil life are better than just using odometer or hourmeter. But my priorities on engine wear vs. maintenance costs are probably not the same as corporate bean counters, or marketing departments.

I changed mine earlier than average too. IMO do it now and then again at 5k. Then every 5k after that with full synthetic. I’m on my 4th oil change and I’m sitting at 16k on the OD.

I did my engine oil and rear differential oil around 1,000 miles. The rear diff oil was way nastier looking than the engine oil. I now do 5,000 mile intervals on the engine.

Oil change intervals are like condoms, some people can go long and some need a short one, its personal, so make sure you ride right!
